I want to get a cheap (i.e. old <$400) laptop with a long battery...just something that can do word processing and has a battery for 4 hours or something.

btw I know li-ion batteries decrease capacity as they get old, but I'll probably just get a new battery

As a general rule, the older the laptop, the less battery life you should have. Your laptops with the best battery life ought to be Centrino, because battery life is one of the primary objectives of the engineering. AMD's 64-bit laptops are good if you need 64-bits. But the 64-bit extensions should take away from the battery life.

I believe if he got a transmeta based laptop, he'd be good. Though one problem I noticed with transmeta based laptop (ignoring performance) is the fact they seemed to be shoved into TINY sony laptops with TINY batteries therefore never allowing for decent battery life anyways. If you can find a fullsized transmeta based laptop, try to look up old articles on it's battery life.

Transmeta was the Late Pentium II, Early to mid Pentium III era... (2000)
