I picked up an inspiron 8600 yesterday . It was suffering from mass vidoe corruption but after I set a lower resolution I was able to mostly see the screen and figured Id tinker with it.

I was unable to pinpoint any issues using the troubleshooting utility. All test came back functional. I ran memtest for a few loops and that was fine. I decided to try a clean install of xp home ( thats what came with the machine )

After install it was all good till I tried loading drivers. If I install the inf update for the chipset I get corruption and nothing short in reinstalling will fix it. If I use the drivers bundled in xp home I can load all drivers it works great.

If I try to use an xp disk with sp2 the problem comes back. If I try to upgrade to sp2 the issue comes back.

Any ideas how I can get sp2 on this machine and still be useable?

UPDATE: It upgrades from home vanilla to sp3 just fine.
