Old laptop, can't seem to install XP Pro

I bought an old P3 laptop from a previous owner who had tried to "delete" Win98 in order to get rid of a persistant virus. The laptop did not come with any type of recovery disks or whatnot. Lastly, it's an old Sager model, but I cannot seem to find any system drivers for it on the web.

I tried to format the drive and install XP Pro on it, and it seems to do just that, but as soon as it reboots, I can either let it boot from the XP CD, in which case it starts over with the installation. Or, if I let it boot from the hard drive, it goes to a blank screen.

Is there any way around this? My only guess is that I am missing some kind of model-specific driver that is causing me this headache.

I would appreciate any help you guys could give me. TIA.
