(Never give up; KEEP DELVING)
In the event it might help someone, I am about to share the specifics of how I just now installed my old, infamous, best printer ever, HP Photosmart P1000 in my new system running W7 64 bit. A MIRACLE! I could never have figured this out myself; I spent much time delving on the interwebs, I have learned, I am hardly the only person on earth who would hate to give up this old, splendid printer, which is still being sold, believe it or not:
http://www.amazon.com/HP-PhotoSmart-.../dp/B000063W9A
I finally came upon this, addressing this challenge:
http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/9357-hp-photosmart-p1000-driver.html
And below, is the fix some genius in the UK posted in the above thread; it worked immediately:
HP Photosmart P1000 installed & running in Win 7
Greetings, all,
Had the same problem with my P1000 - no driver. (The .enu package for XP from the HP website would not install - even after multiple attempts using various compatability settings. It would not find the printer.)
STEPS:
1. In "Devices and Printers" click "Add a printer"
2. Select "Add a local printer" - IGNORING the "only if you don't have a USB printer" (Trust me.)
3. Under the "Use and existing port" option, select "USB001 (Virtual printer port for USB)
4. Click "Next" then "Windows Update"
5. After a few seconds, the "HP Deskjet 930C/932C/935C" option will appear.
6. Highlight it and click "Next"
VOILA'! Yeah, it miffs me that the printer name and icon are not for my P1000, but hey, "the proof is in the printing"! And, using the menus, I can even clean my cartridge.
Thanks for the tip on the 930C - something I'd never have tried otherwise.
I'm running Win 7 Professional on a MacBook Pro in a Bootcamp partition. FYI, with 4 GB RAM it SCREAMS on
games!

As in my older system running W7 32 bit, where I found a different get around, you can not access the HP toolbox, but who cares??????????????
I can almost not BELIEVE THIS WORKED, BUT IT DID!
