(Never give up; KEEP DELVING)

In the event it might help someone, I am about to share the specifics of how I just now installed my old, infamous, best printer ever, HP Photosmart P1000 in my new system running W7 64 bit. A MIRACLE! I could never have figured this out myself; I spent much time delving on the interwebs, I have learned, I am hardly the only person on earth who would hate to give up this old, splendid printer, which is still being sold, believe it or not:

http://www.amazon.com/HP-PhotoSmart-.../dp/B000063W9A

I finally came upon this, addressing this challenge:

http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/9357-hp-photosmart-p1000-driver.html

And below, is the fix some genius in the UK posted in the above thread; it worked immediately:

HP Photosmart P1000 installed & running in Win 7
Greetings, all,
Had the same problem with my P1000 - no driver. (The .enu package for XP from the HP website would not install - even after multiple attempts using various compatability settings. It would not find the printer.)
STEPS:
1. In "Devices and Printers" click "Add a printer"
2. Select "Add a local printer" - IGNORING the "only if you don't have a USB printer" (Trust me.)
3. Under the "Use and existing port" option, select "USB001 (Virtual printer port for USB)
4. Click "Next" then "Windows Update"
5. After a few seconds, the "HP Deskjet 930C/932C/935C" option will appear.
6. Highlight it and click "Next"
VOILA'! Yeah, it miffs me that the printer name and icon are not for my P1000, but hey, "the proof is in the printing"! And, using the menus, I can even clean my cartridge.
Thanks for the tip on the 930C - something I'd never have tried otherwise.
I'm running Win 7 Professional on a MacBook Pro in a Bootcamp partition. FYI, with 4 GB RAM it SCREAMS on
PC
games!

As in my older system running W7 32 bit, where I found a different get around, you can not access the HP toolbox, but who cares??????????????

I can almost not BELIEVE THIS WORKED, BUT IT DID!

It's cool you got it working, but there are better/cheaper printers to run.

I had this fun getting my HP 4c scanner (scsi) working...I went to a cheaper Mustek, but the scans are just as good. I just doubt it will last 10+ years like my 4c did.

That said the 4c was $1600, the mustek under $200

I feel U. Esp re the Mustek will NO WAY last as long as the older puppy!!

Pls know, since getting this built to last printer as a gift way back, I have bought and given away two newer printers! I also get knock off carts on eBay, and the vendor I use sells really good ones. I like stand alone, including my scanner. Multifunction peripherals, in my experience, are crap: too much technology jammed into too small a space.....forget, most new printers which weigh 3 ounces. Well, cept for some high end laser printers. Newer=faster, off the hook NEEDLESS bells & whistles, AND MADE LIKE CRAP/disposable.

I have so much luv and respect for this old workhorse printer, feeling I could NO WAY use it with 64 bit was one reason I was first adverse to running 64 bit! I mean it. We live, we keep trying.....we LEARN. So, U nailed it......what I came upon and followed to get this done in one nano......SOOOOO COOL! When the test page came out, and re "environment" it said "Windows x64" I just screamed "YAY!" And I now have more money to spend on new software for this system.

PS: Happy to say, I did find drivers for my Canon scanner for W7 64 bit.

Funny thing is...I have that printer too. It's been collecting dust for the last 8 years. It's an ink hog; half the ink is used to clean the heads. And the colors fade over time, even with HP ink. And skintones aren't even close to accurate. I stopped using it when it became a whole lot cheaper to print pictures at CVS.

Curious as to what is so great about this printer? And who is this ebay vendor?

Well.....as the French say, chacun a son gout. My take on the printer is mine...cept, struggling to find a way to get it to function with W7 64 bit, I found infinite threads made by people all over the world who seem to feel the same about it.

BUT, I do almost no photo printing, and I bet yr issues with that re this printer are prolly justified.

I like all things which are WELL MADE---made to last, well engineered.---things which have something similar to human character. And, my observation is, in most things, the newer, the crummier/the shorter the average life expectancy. Even cars.

I just got my third Optiplex MT on eBay. I only get used ones. Other day, I got my oldest one out, the old GX260 with the famous clam shell tower....and, OMG, it was made better than my next one, the GX620, and way better than my new one, the 980.

But, as technology moves on, newer things are faster, more efficient....but CRUMMIER. Now, all made in third world countries by small children in basement paid almost nothing. Not that China is any species of a third world country, tho. :p

I don't find the printer to be an ink hog, but again, I do little photo printing...and my print heads almost never need cleaning. I make sure to keep the printer turned off unless I want to print something....I think, cause of heat reduction, it helps.

There are infinite vendors on eBay who sell third party/remfg ink for almost every printer, including this one. As in all things, some are better than others, you do the usual work of finding out what is what....there, via feedback, etc.

I like this vendor: http://www.ebay.com/usr/abacusink

....and I have also gotten official HP carts, not expired for amazing prices from other eBay vendors. As usual, you gotta delve.

This printer may just not be right for YOU. We are each unique!

Edit: I just did some fast delving and found this: http://mythreecents.com/showReview.cgi?id=101148

Plus, I got lucky: I was raised by two antiquarians, and they knew qualiity in all things, unlike many of my friends' parents, and I seem to have many of their values (unlike many of my friends who must own tomorrow's model of everything today).
