old HD won't load ... installing new hard drive - should I be able to recover some data?

I had a $MFT error on my desktop and tried to fix it w/ some of the recommended tools on the web. I backed up my important documents, and a few days later, the drive stopped loading. I am currently formatting a new drive (i set the old drive to slave and the new one is the master).

Given that the old drive still has windows on it, should I have any problems installing windows on the new HD? Is there anything I can do to increase the chances of recovering some alternative docs (mostly music/bookmarks)

Thanks a lot!

Yes and NO. Yes, you can install Windows without a problem but I highly suggest disconnecting the old hdd until you finalize your windows installation so it won't interfere in the installation. Then connect it as slave and try reading it off using Explorer. If it won't read, use a hdd diagnostic programs to check the old hdd. No, if problem is mechanical there's probably no way to recover the data except when taken to professional data recovery shops. Run CHKDSK/f and see if it can be read.
