Old game helbreath

Im trying to play helbreath for old times its an old mmorpg , its direct x 4 or 5 im using an 7950gx2 and the game open fines... but when i go to alt tab or quit my monitor (vx2025wm) spazes out and i gotta pull the power out and put it back in... it looks like its loosing signal.. any idea? Ive tried single gpu rendering and compability performace mode.
 
I had a similar problem with an old game once... I eventually just made a shortcut to a fullscreen command prompt with a hot key assignment. When it happens just hit the hot key. If it works then you just type exit at the prompt and the desktop will reappear. If it didn't work then the system probably locked up and you will have to reboot.

 
... I realize that. but opening a command window full screen sets a new video mode which may restore the display.
