hello:

I have an older dell 4100 as a secondary mp3/file server.

Had a secondary HD die ( maxtor click of death - bought it on some hot deal ) - and since then my CD and DVD drive have not been recognized.

finally decided to try and fix it tonight - pulled out all the cables and started from scratch.

Plugged everything in, and booted to dos with a bootdisk to see what happens. Result: no CD or DVD drive recognized.

Booted to windows xp pro -- same thing -- no DVD or CD drive shows up

Pulled out the IDE cables, and plugged the HD into the far left slot, the CD/DVD into the middle, and the floppy into the far right one. When i booted, the CD/DVD is recognized, but no HD shows up.

So I've basically confirmed that that middle slot works, but the far left does not ( sorry for not knowing the technical terms here :) )

So -- any way to diagnose this or even fix it ?

thanks for any help ...
