I'm putting together an old (P-II333) Dell system to use primarily as a server for MP3's, etc. So far everything is working well with the exception that I can't enable DMA on my CD-RW (TDK VeloCD 12x10x32); hey, I said it was old. 😉
Anyway, when I try to enable DMA (I should add that I'm running Win98se) the secondary fifo ide controllers get corrupted when checking in device manager. That hoses the CD-ROM, and I have to disable DMA to get it to work. I've had DMA enabled on this before, but I can't remember what I did to solve this problem. It sucks to not have it enabled; it really cripples the performance of the drive.
Anyone out there with an old Dell P-II or similar have any knowledge on this problem?
Edit: I should add that besides the case, ps, mb, cpu and memory; every-things else has been upgraded/changed.
I added: 256MB PC-133 for a total of 384MB (even though it can only utilize 66, I had it laying around and it works fine), 2 40GB Maxtor HD's, SB PCI64 sound card, STB Velocity 4400 video, NIC and aforementioned TDK VeloCD burner. This must bring back flashbacks to the late nineties!
