Old CRT going out: 17+" LCD for under $400 advice

My CRT is almost screwed since it's shaking weirdly. I looked at some LCD stuff from Cnet and from the Hot Deals place, and here's some choices I came up with. I want to stay under 400, and closer to 300 if possible. One concern for 17" LCDs I have is the 1280x1024 resolution. Wouldn't that mess things up on a 3:4 aspect ratio?

Envision 7100E for $319. Looks decent, it gets tons of good reviews where people like the quality and the (lack of) ghosting. Cons: online only = I can't check it out instore.

Liquidvideo 17" LCD at Circuit City. Some off-brand, apparently branded by CC. But very cheap, and the reviewers have almost always liked the quality, including the (lack of) ghosting. Another pro: in-store means I can check it out. Cons: no DVI-D.

NEC 17xx Series. Cnet loved the 1700NX (about $399 street). They have felt that it was good all-around, and in addition, it has DVI-D. Too bad it's a good chunk more money than the models above.

Dell 1800FP: Sweet monitor when there's a ~$380ish hot deal. Too bad those rarely happen.

Any insight/suggestions? Any other models to look at? I'm leaning towards looking at some Liquidvideos in-store till I find a dead pixel-free one.

If you can't find 17" CRTs for closer to $150 USD, then you are looking in the wrong places. It's the shipping that will kill you at $50.

Hey, don't call me an idiot... I might be stupid, but not an idiot. 😱

I purchased a refurbished Sony 18" LCD (SDM-S81) for $390 from uBid.com. If you don't mind the refurb gamble/issues, you might want to check there. You can even buy extended service plans.

I looked at the Sony 18", I agree, really big and nice for the cost, but the Amazon reviews weren't spectacular.

Dug, how often have the 1800FP Dell deals been? Does anyone have inside knowledge as to when the next one will come? 😉 My 17" tube seems like it's gonna go any minute. It randomly starts seizuring and convulsing every half hour to an hour (or so).

Another concern I had was the 1280x1024 resolution. What do LCD owners think? Don't things look kind of abnormal because of the 4:3 screen size ratio and the 5:4 resolution ratio?

It was hard to adjust to at first, but after a while you get used to it...the biggest problem is if you were to play a game that your video card could not handle at 1280x1024, then you would be unable to scale down without some distortion...I had that problem with my monitor, my AIW Radeon and Raven Shield until I upgraded to my AIW 9600 pro

Hmm, yea, I hope 1280x1024 won't be too bad. I still think it's weird they don't do 1280x960 though. But yea, whatever 🙂

I'm not sure when another one will come around, but they always do.
They haven't even let the 10% be applied to their 18" for long time, so hopefully something will come up soon.

I'm holding out myself as my crt monitor is going out too and giving me headaches.

After thinking a bit more, I'm pretty sure I'll just go in-store and check out the Liquidvideo 17". The reviews are excellent, and I can always take a look in-store to judge quality and to get one with few to no dead pixels. I hope the VGA only connection doesn't take away much from quality, like what the user reviews say.

Just tried to dig some info, and it is the same monitor as this. Very good specs, including 16ms response, 400cd/m^2, and 450:1. No wonder people are mostly happy with this LCD.
