old cable + iphone = no?

So I haven't sunc in a while, and i recently wiped out vista and put on XP. I tried to sync with an older gen ipod cable, and the iphone is not recognized (although it does charge).

I tried this on another machine, and it appeared in itunes for a few seconds then disappeared (with the same older cable). So do they only work with 'newer' sync cables? Any ideas would be awesome.

No, the cable hasn't changed.

Are you running the current version of iTunes?

erm, well it change did, kinda. Some of the OLD OLD cables were firewire, which the new ipod's don't support. That said, it wouldn't have shown up at ALL if you tried to use a FW cable on a newer iPod, they don't even have the chipset.

EDIT: Also, you said USB in your subtitle, so im way off base here 🙂

Older ipod USB cables work with no problem, if you haven't already done so, restore your iphone as this is the solution to 99% of the problems. If that doesnt solve it, it is time to call Apple or drop by your local apple store.
