Old (but more) memory. Will I see an improvement?

Hi, I have a relatively old computer which was very good when I bought it maybe 2.5 years ago. Core 2 Duo, 8800 GTS, 2 GB ram. I honestly cannot remember more specific stats, I'm writing this from work unfortunately.

Anyway, two weeks ago my gpu gave up on me, which was a sad day. I never thought I'd be able to go without upgrading to this day, still playing Bad Company 2 at decent settings and looking pretty with such an old gpu. Anyway, a friend brought a replacement cards, a 8500 GT which works fine but is worse than the 8800 obviously. At least I can check my e-mail...

He also brought 2 GB of ram which I inserted and what I'm wondering now is if I'll see some improvement. They are obviously of different make and timings than the original ram, but going from 2 to 4 GB should be a major improvement anyway, right? Basically I'm worried because memory is always bundled and there are always warnings about mixing ram.

Just plug them in, run memtest86 for a few hours and if you get no errors, enjoy.
Im running with 6GB; 4 ram modules of 3 different brands 3 different rated speeds and 2 different capacities (2x1 GB DDR2-667 + 2GB DDR2-800 + 2GB DDR2-1066) and it all works great at 800 MHz dual channel. Its not "recommended" and it may not work but its certainly worth trying and beats having just 2GB.
