As far as I know No.

Might I be first to suggest getting something other than a BB! :)

Why the hell did you pick that old thing for a 2 year contract? My dad got one of those for a 2 year contract like 2 and a half years ago lol

I think there is a version of OS 5 out there for the 8830, you'll have to search a bit for it.

would updating the OS have anything to do with my service provider? i.e. could it screw with my phone connction or anything?

I've never seen or heard of that, but I'm not saying it isn't possible. You will likely lose the service provider specific apps (if you currently have any). If it doesn't work 100% you can always go back to the latest 4.5 OS.

It looks like the OS 5 out there for the 8830 is an unoffical release, meaning either RIM or the service providers decided not to release it.

There are new OS Versions out there for you device, but there is a BIG caveat:

Follow this thread, as the 5.0 OS will need you to check the exact version of hardware you have, as there is a difference between Sprint and Boost Mobile 8330 versions.

Please study THIS thread carfully:

Then when you're happy you have it all down, check this thread for a full 101 on updating a BlackBerry OS:
