can I get a new "universal" one or something? How do I get a replacement? Do I have to replace the whole apparatus?

You can buy universal remotes at most places like Sears, Kmart, Walmart, etc. You should have an access box inside your garage or you may have to look on the actual motorized unit. But you should be able to find the code that you will have to set the universal remotes to. I saw 2 control set at Kmart the other weekend for like $39.
