Im not familiar with this cpu and tho i did have it installed years ago in one of my systems, i have forgotten what the socket is called for this type cpu. Im thinking about buying a cheapo mobo for this cpu to build a kiddie rig for my kids to play on with school projects ect but i dont remember what socket type of mobo i need for this.

thx!

Socket A.

But you're better off selling it and buying a socket 754 Sempron 2600+ - 3400+ instead for a budget PC, along with a nice all-in-one motherboard like a Biostar TForce microATX and Antec NSK4400 case. Or getting a cheap Dell with legal copy of Windows.

I agree. Thats likely the best solution.

Possibly true if you get something used from FS/FT forum, though Dell has complete PCs starting at $300 including a legal copy of Windows.

thx for all the responses so far.

Yes, this is going to be a cheapo low end system i am putting together with the many spare parts i have left over in my garage from over the years. I have quite a few old parts that ive tested and still work.

I have the following junk to install into this budget kiddie rig:

CPU: AMD 1800+
Vid card: AGP Geforce 4 4600 128mb
Ram: 512mb pc133 generic stuff
Harddrive: Maxtor Diamondmax 40GB 7200rpm
case: ATX dunno what brand
DVD drive: plextor 12x
floppydrive: sony
keyb + mouse: M$ keyb + optical mouse

Need:
some kind of socket A mobo thats cheap

Am i forgetting anything?

I have a old version of win98se (legal copy) Should i use win98se or go for XP home edition?

The one stumbling block is the PC-133. Biostar & ECS each kept one last MB design going a couple of years after DDR took over, featuring both PC-133 and DDR slots (exclusive usage -- one or the other, not both kinds at the same time). But that ended a good ways back, so finding one may be difficult.

I had one from an eBay auction that no one else bid on, and the minimum was maybe $9.99 or something. That was long enough ago that I think it's been used and gone home with a friend or relative wanting an upgrade for their kids' PC. Between Price Grabber & Pricewatch, the single new (PC-133) one was $50, a brand I never heard of (Tiga):

Dang i knew it was too good to be true. I completely missed the fact that all the mobos have gone over to DDR. Well this makes the "cheapie kiddie rig" not so cheap anymore. Buying DDR ram for an old junker system is prolly not worth it. I was planning on spending maybe 50-75 MAX (for a mobo) and have the thing running but at this point that wont happen. Not without the DDR ram, and id prolly need 512mb at the very minimum. Arrgg.. what to do now, the kids are gonna be dissapointed.
