Even with the added guns it still took incredible pilot skill to get them home, hitting a fighter is not easy at all as they whiz by at 400MPH..

Trying to hit a hubcap on a moving car with a spitwad

Played war games with miniature aircraft and had some scenarios where it would be a few fighters vs a B-17 and 2 fighters. If you approach the bomber wrong you were screwed. Once we played with 3 flying in formation and there was no way to get in close for good shots without getting plugged.

HAHA! "I wanted to lift my head and tell them they were full of shit." The guy is near death and he wanted to tell the guys helping him that they were full of shit for saying he was dead. These old guys had brass balls unlike just about any other generation.

The story almost sounds like a movie script. Rag tag bomber crew without a plane rebuilds a junker, names it ol' 666, fights against impossible odds, saves the day, becomes heroes.

What made that generation of people so special that they would never give up ?
They where constantly reminded that their efforts where not in vain. The jump in science, the hope ? Believing in the honest and right thing to do is the proper way ? A strong moral code ? A strong social code ? The heroes presented at the time in movies ? What made these people jump out to be the pillars of society ? I find it amazing.

didn't have a choice/naive
early in wars many people used to volunteer for the glory, later on..not so much
then you get conscription
people tend to choose to fight to live when the other option is death:p

there is one difference though, the anti war groups were suppressed, the constant nag of negativity propaganda from within was delt with, that stuff can make you lose a war.

I think we would answer the call if it hit the fan again. We bitch a lot amongst ourselves, but if another sovereign country attacked us directly, we'd unite in a heartbeat.
But I don't foresee an attack like that happening.

They went through a nasty depression without medicare, welfare, or SSI then fought bravely in WW2. No "smart" bombs, cruise missiles, ect., when you went into battle they saw you, you saw them and it was on.
