OLAP vs. Relational Database

I've been put in charge of looking at converting our Sales Forecasting tool from its current MS Access2000 relational database form (which I am very familiar with) to an OLAP product called TM1 that is kinda like an add on to MS Excell. I have zero experience with OLAP products and was wondering if anyone could give me a basic and general description of the pluses and minus of comparing these 2 apples and oranges.
