TULSA, Oklahoma — A Tulsa man is accused of shooting and killing his Lebanese neighbor, a deadly result of years of anti-Arab racism and harassment directed at the victim and his family, according to reports.

Stanley Vernon Majors, 61, is expected to be charged with first-degree murder in the death of Khalid Jabara, 37, who was shot Friday after he stepped outside to get his mail while talking on the phone with his mother.

Jabara was warning his mother that he had learned that Majors now had a weapon and that he was concerned for her safety, the Tulsa World reports. His mother heard the shots over the phone.

The mother, Haifa Jabara, already had survived a violent encounter with Majors, reports say. Last September, he struck Haifa Jabara with his car as she jogged through the neighborhood, causing serious injuries, the Washington Post reports. Majors was released from jail in May after posting bond.

The Jabara family are Orthodox Christian immigrants from Lebanon, the Los Angeles Times reports. But Majors, who moved in to a home next to the family with his husband in 2011, taunted them by calling them "dirty Arabs," "filthy Lebanese," "Aye-rabs" and "Mooslems," according to the World

I saw this on last nights news. The guy had many run ins and complaints from his neighbors, he hit the victims mother with his car (I believe in her yard), was jailed for that. Asked to be released on bail, two Judges said no, third Judge said yes. He heads home gets a gun somehow and shoots his neighbor.
Why is identifying and treating the mentally ill so difficult. Seriously the guy had a restraining order but kept yelling Muslim's at his neighbors then hit one with his car. Imagine living next to this guy, I don't like the idea of forced institutionalization but there has to be a process that most of us can agree on.

PS the family is Lebanese Christians that came to the US to avoid opression.

On Friday, Jabara called police to inform them that he had heard Majors had acquired a gun—as part of a restraining order Jabara's mother had taken out on Majors, which he had been charged with violating, the 61-year-old was not allowed to possess firearms. The police told Jabara that there was nothing they could do and left his home. Eight minutes later, according to the account Tulsa Police Homicide Sgt. Dave Walker gave the Post, neighbors reported hearing gunshots. Majors had allegedly shot and killed Jabara on his front porch while the 37-year-old was on his cellphone with his family and getting the mail.

Many mentally ill don't hear their diagnosis and say, "You're right doc, I am dangerous, lock me away for life." They don't want to go to the usually dilapidated / unsafe / in the middle of nowhere health centres or shelters and live like prisoners.

Our laws make it very difficult to lock up a person because they might post a danger (for good reason). The downside to that cynicism about the government having the power to lock you away for pre-crime is that things like this will occasionally happen.

I'm talking about a guy like this who has repeatedly caused problems in his neighborhood, had a restraining order then decided to hit one of the people who had the restraining order with his car. There seems to be some pretty clear inicators here.

Meh to me seems more like a POS than a victim of mental illness. Hatred is NOT a mental illness, it is simply a corrosive emotion.
