we're looking at buying a new TV for around $2k.

so we went out to compusa the other day and just looked around at some TVs. Since we know essentially nothing about these fancy tvs, we just looked at the prices and brands.

we saw a samsung plasma 42" EDTV having a special for like $1899. and a viewsonic edtv same size for a hundred less or so. I heard EDTV is almost the same as SDTV, but seeing that we never watch anything in hi-def i dont think thatd be a problem at all. we saw some LCDs, they were a lot more expensive i think, and smaller too.

so i went home to try to research on LCD vs Plasma and found different sites telling me different things. they all seem to be biased towards one or another. i cant find one that gives the pros and cons of each respectively.

i dont believe rear projection would be a viable option because we are kind of cramped on size. some of them looked pretty massive.

then i saw a sony grand WEGA at Circuitcity- LCD-HDTV for like 2.5 grand 50". so i was like, hmm there must be something wrong with this. either its not real HDTV, not real LCD, or soemthing. its strange because usually sony stuff is a lot moer expensive.

i need some insight into this. what do you guys recommend?

i wish i could help you out, but i'm too poor to be looking at tv's that nice.

well, lcds are much more expensive when you compare them to plasmas of similar size, so you're going for a good sized tv thats flat panel, i suggest plasma if you want to stay in budget

$2k puts you in 42" Pannasonic EDTV plasma country. It is a fantastic plasma for the price. Head over to AVSforum.com for the full details. If the plasma discussion boards had an official mascot, it would be the 42 Pannasonic EDTV plasma.

Also note that it comes in two flavors: commerical (super value) and consumer (more goodies).

Well, if you absolutely have to have a flat screen, ED is a solution. Keeping in mind that HD will become more and more prevailent in the next couple of years. If you look towards HD as a solution, you have rear projection units, LCD, and DLP technologies that look very good, and can be had in your price range or a little higher. They are only running ~18in in depth. It might be something else to check out.

Most of the scripted network shows are HD, and it is a big difference in quality. You might want to think about trying to get a HD set instead.
