Okay, WHEN did DVDs start putting previews in the front?

I rented Radio tonight, and after I popped it in, we had to sit through like 15 mins of previews that the machine WOULDN'T LET ME SKIP.

That is just NOT cool to me. Are all DVDs getting this way?

Just fast forward with your fastest speed. They're outta the way in no time. Previews seem to be popping up a lot more often these days, although I can't say I didn't see it coming some time or another. I'm actually surprised it took this long.

Certain movies have blocked the menu option from skipping previews.

Same here, there are parts that what won't let you skip.

I watch them more when they are called "sneek previews"

They just seem to annoy me less when I can pick the time that I watch them. Usually after the movie is done.

Yeah I just bought a DVD and popped it in... 4 previews - not skippable. I thought it was just my player, but I guess not after hearing about this.

5 years ago or so, I was wondering when they'd actually put real commercials in at the theatres... they finally have... and now... I guess the next logical step would be onto DVDs. I guess paying for it doesn't mean anything anymore. Whatever happened to "commercials keep it free" ? Previews are in the same boat.

What DVDs I have with previews (usually ADV, some odd major releases) allow me to skip. Thankfully I haven't run into any wiht manditory previews. Ug, I hate to see that it's a continuing trend, though :| First I had heard about it was Hulk.

I find it's the parts like the FBI warning and the legal disclaimer crap that lock the players so you can't skip, fast forward, or Go to Menu to get by them on a lot of DVDs I have. That annoys the hell out of me. What's the point of ROM medium if I have to sit through crap like that?

I hear Apex players are a good way around this sort of thing as they're lacking software support for fuction locking.

Lion King 1½ has like 9 mandatory previews... Sucks.

Atleast you can skip through them after you watch the first 5 seconds or so. Still a PITA.

i hate those non-skippable DVDs. part of the reason i stop collecting DVDs. bastard movie companies. If they are gonna do those damn previews, they should mark the dvds cheaper. asswipes.

I've not been unable to skip previews yet, but some movies are making it impossible to skip/fwd through the silly ass fvcking fbi warnings. OK I'VE SEEN THAT WARNING ABOUT 700 TIMES IN MY LIFE I GET THE PICTURE.

Really? All the movies I watch usually have that part edited out!;)

the last couple of movies we've rented have a screen at the beginning that gives the options of "previews" or "feature" (or something like that). that way you can just go straight to the movie if you don't want to see the previews. we'd never seen anything like this and thought it was kinda odd, but we weren't complaining!

Apparently not - I just bought a retail DVD (released Tuesday) and it comes straight up to the previews... with a specific message telling us to "fast forward" if we want to get to the menu. There's no other way to get past it. That's 3.5 minutes right there I have to fast forward EACH TIME I put the DVD in (unless it's on resume). :|

I've been able to get by many of these DVDs by hitting the button for title menu.

Certain movies have blocked the menu option from skipping previews.

there are Mods for DVD players that you can still skip thru them. Here is statement from a DVD player shop here in Switzerland:
Do not let the movie industry take control over your DVD Player. DVD players with UOPs disabled will allow you to have every button on your remote control being executed immediately. Who wants to watch FBI warnings over and over? Who wants to wait up to minutes when entering the menu? Who wants to watch commercials before he can start the movie? Who wants to be told what combination of spoken language and subtitle he can select? Take the control back by modifying your DVD player for UOP disabled or by buying a UOP disabled player!
