Okay to use software to change laptop screen's brightness?

I just got a Dell Latitude D800 and I like the screen and all but it feels somewhat washed out. I obviously know about the Function + Arrow feature to change the brightness there...but it does it in too big of increments. Is it okay to download software that will let me precisely adjust the brightness, contrast, etc? If so...what kinda software should I use?
