Okay to switch to different kind of battery?

The battery on my IBM Thinkpad i-series is totally dead...I'm not surprised since it's a NiMh part that's about 4 years old now. I was thinking of replacing the battery, but I don't really want another NiMh since they don't hold charge well after some time. Here are some specs on the laptop:

IBM Thinkpad I-series 1200
model 1161-260
battery part number is FRU P/N 02K6692

I found this NiMh part which is the replacement for this laptop. There's also this Li-Ion part for an I-series thinkpad. I want to try to get a Li-Ion if possible...

Can anyone tell me if I can just drop this Li-Ion part in place of the NiMh? Or are there really complicated things like the charging technology of the laptop design that will not like the swap? Are there any other alternative besides just sticking with the NiMh??

thanks for any advice,
Ping

After some research, I don't think that the Li-Ion battery can work with my machine type (1161-260). First of all the physical size of the battery is different than the original NiMh part. I also saw some sites that said the Li-Ion is not compatible with my specific thinkpad.

This is a crappy situation because I don't want to buy another battery that will just die in ~2 years :frown: ...sigh...

You could rig an external battery pack made up of gelled lead-acid batteries. All you need to know is the voltage required at your external power adapter port and the proper connector (usually available at RadioSchlock).
. It will be heavier, but should be cheaper, last longer and withstand many chargings. Or you could remove the NiMH cells from inside the current battery housing and hook your rigged pack in that way.
.bh.
Where's the :sun: ?

Yeah i think i might either get a new NiMh battery soon or just sell this sucker off...it's getting kind of old and probably not worth getting a new battery that's a quarter of its current value. Thanks for all the advice anyways🙂

what kind of laptop is it because batteries are pretty expensive and you can get some notebooks for cheap, might be cheaper in long run

it's a thinkpad i-series 1200 as posted above FYI

yeah there are some really cheap laptops out there (i.e. Sotecs at Best Buy) so that could be a possible route
