Maybe everyone out there knows this and I just belong on the short bus, but I just discovered this nifty little feature.

I knew about F3 and the up arrow, but it turns out a bunch of the function keys have...well.... functions!

It doesn't do $hit for me either, computing or otherwise.

EDIT: I guess it helps to build some commands into the buffer in order to be able to see them, huh? 😱

It doesn't do anything if you don't have any commands cached in there. Type in a couple cd's or dir's and then try it.

That's two of us on the short bus.... 😉

Is this an XP only function? If it's existed since Dos days and I didn't know about it, I'm pissed at myself! that is one of the most useful tips I've ever gotten on here. I'm always in a CMD prompt so I'll be using it often, thanks man 🙂

F3/F5 has been around since at least DOS 5, though I'm thinking it was there in 3X as well. Not sure when F7 was added, I don't think it was there in DOS, likely new to cmd.

I already knew this.

But I've been writing NT Shell scripts for the last three years as a major component of my job, so it was pretty necessary for me to learn any shortcut I could....
