Okay, someone 'splain Laptops and RAM to me

Here at work I'm trying to separate the completely trashed from the mildly useable. I've moved quite a number of computers -- or rather hollowed out husks -- into the latter pile, but I've got one that keeps hanging in limbo between either: an old Toshiba Satellite 2535CDS -- 300Mhz if it matters -- whose only major flaw is the fact that it has no hard drive. It's old, no doubt, and the battery in it can hold a charge for about 5 minutes, but all the non-replacable components are in perfect working order. I'm getting a hard drive for it, but if I want to run anything past Windows 98 on it I'll have to add more RAM. Herein lies my question.

I'm a little bewildered when it comes to RAM in Laptops. I have no clue what the standards are or how I'd even figure out which one the Laptop would accept. PC100? PC66? Something else? I've tried the card from my personal lappy and it didn't work, but again, I don't know what kind of RAM it was.

In short, what's my best bet for adding more RAM to this thing?

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't matter too much what speed you put in, as the pc would just automatically reduce it to what it needed to be. I think that you'll have to ebay and try something there. Why do you want this anyways?

Did you actually read my post?

Work computer, trying to get it up and running. More computers = boss happier with me.

Be warned that laptops use SODIMMs and will not accept desktop memory modules. An old PC100 SDRAM SODIMM should work fine, maybe up to 128MB or 256MB (check how much your laptop will support, most older ones max out at 256MB total)

Sry, don't jump down my throat.

Newegg has SODIMMs listed for at least $25 for a stick of 128. PC66, PC100, PC133...its all the same. Just make sure that it fits in the slot.

I found a reseller that specifically listed the entire Toshiba Satellite line as being compatible with the RAM they were selling. (Listed a few specific models as well, which had the same specs as listed on the link furnished by Trippytiger) Problem solved. Muchos Gracias.

66MHz EDO RAM???? :Q:Q:Q:Q:Q:Q:Q:Q

Holy crap that stuff is old. And IIRC, EDO RAM can only be put in pairs. Have fun with that 😉
