Okay, so some pedophiles are scoping out my kids online...

I have a website for family and friends, where a new picture of my kids (I have three young boys) is uploaded each day. I've never password protected the site, because we have a variety of fairly non-computer-literate people that like to see the pictures.

I noticed the bandwidth was particularly high this month, so I perused the weblogs. Apparently a pedophile message board has linked a couple of pictures, discovered by looking at the referring URL and the high number of requests for these images. I don't know the context of how the images were posted on the message board, because that part of the site is private and I sure as hell am not registering for it. The public part of the board has such wonderful polls as, "How often a day do you j**k off?" and "What age do you prefer your boys?" The site name also has the word "peddy" in it, so apparently they're not too upset with the pedophile label.

I have already banned the IP addresses for every machine that came from that URL (most were from the Netherlands). I also removed my site from Google (I'm guessing picture names like "cute boys" probably triggered Google hits we didn't want). I suck at Photoshop, so if one of you guys wants to make a nice substitute image for the two pictures that were linked, I'll be happy to put them up. I still don't want to password-protect the site, but will if this activity continues, even though it might eliminate some of the aunts and uncles and grandparents from getting to the site.

Any other ideas?

Cliff Notes:
1) Some pictures of my kids apparently got linked to a pedophile website
2) Asking for help dealing with it
3) Pedophiles are the scum of the earth

I agree with you on all three points.:)
You can have restricted accounts verifying ip first and the users telling you what the name/who they are(recommendations can be also useful. Anything is good in my book that will restrict pedophiles from posting on your family site.

replace the pics with a police officer or a nasty old naked lady lol

Replace the pictures with something offensive. Though, I don't know what's considered offensive to a pedophile. A hot babe?

I would definitely password protect it, even if you don't want to.

That is sick, those people disgust me to no end. Listen to this... someone in my office building approached me a few years back and said he heard I was good with computers. "Can you install my new hard drive, and also, can you find out why my old drive is so full?" I don't even have to continue do I? I went to the cops. Nothing has happened with it but at least they know to keep an eye on the dude. ew

Contact the authorities. If you have IP addresses, maybe action can be taken, even though many of the addresses are coming from other countries.

It can't hurt to ask.

This is the reason why I don't post any personal pictures on the web. In the rare occassion that I do share digital pics, I do so via e-mail.

My wife mentioned that. Only problem is (a) I don't know the actual content of the site in the private area, but the public area makes it apparent what is going on, and (b) as far as I know, it's not illegal to "be" a pedophile, just to act on it.

I'll be happy to post their IP addresses though :)

Isn't it disgusting to have to worry about crap like that?

True, but I don't think they've set up a shrine to my kids. Primitive measures are probably enough. I wish I could send a million volts down the internet and into the mouse, but alas that technology hasn't been perfected yet.

What filenames are you using on the pictures? Can you change them to something random, say for example MFP-# (My Family Photos-photo number)? Don't use a common digital camera prefix (I think mine uses DCPXXX). Definatly don't use descriptive filenames (ie: kidsplaying.jpg).

Also, isn't there some sort of header you can include on all your pages so google doesn't index them?

If you do both those things and change around your filenames/directory structures (ie: make yoursite.com/photos be yoursite.com/famphotos), that should make things harder for them to find.

This man has the answer. What better way to traumatize a pedophile than give them exactly the opposite of what they want to see, an old, worn out man showing his gapin........well, you know the rest. :D

From the Hallowed Halls of Bash.org:

"i'm going to become rich and famous after i invent a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet"

Sorry to hear about this, but you should look into sites like Ofoto instead.

Oh and I guess I owe my wife an appology. She was concerned when I posted pictures of our 5-year old daughter on my domain for her grandmother and uncle to see. I password protected the directory just to be safe, but it took like 20 frickin' minutes to talk my mother through logging into the site. I'd PayPal you money if I thought that you'd fly over there and take care of business with these sick fvcks.

Maybe if you change your address and rename the pictures to generic photopictures, it will be harder to find and for them to link to.
