this is my first experience with a flat screen crt. if you guys recall i bought a used one recently under all your guys' advice to stay away from regular CRTs.

well ... my monitor has waves. sort of whenever i bump the table, or whenever my speakers are playing really really loud (like i like them) ... the monitor is a little wavy. wavy like water. or it shakes. i cant really describe it. it only happens when theres a lot of vibration or when i bump the table?

should i RMA this? or is this normal? it's a 19" viewsonic pf790

thanks!

Two things come to mind:

1. Are the speakers shielded? Try moving them away from the monitor and see what you get.

2. I had a power supply cause that by flaking out to the point of starving the AGP slot. Not that this would explain the bumps or loud music but I know the PS can cause that same symptom.

I have the PF790 and have not noticed anything related to what you are describing. An RMA might be the key if you don't notice any change when moving the speakers around. How about the cables behind the monitor. Any chance they are coiled up?

Are you seeing moire? Is that what you're talking about? If so, there's an adjustment for that in your monitor controls.

I have a PF790 and I've never seen that behavior from it. Sounds like a lemon to me.

I know that if you shake a monitor with an aperture grill such as a trinitron, you'll see some waves, but you've really gotta smack it and I don't reccomend it. ;)

speakers are old 3 piece altec lansings from about six years ago. they didn't affect my old 17" viewsonic. i believe they are shielded. also theyre pretty far away from the monitor ... about a foot each. i do not have a fluorescent. it's not "too" noticeable. but if you rap the table really hard the screen jiggles slightly in the middle. good/bad/normal?

speakers first: emi is the prime culprit.
second: try a lower refresh rate or screen depth
thirdly: try powering it from another circuit. you could have bad power.
then lastly run around the room like a chicken clucking.

maybe that last part is a bad idea.

buddy of mine had a similar effect. Turned out that his wife had put a air cleaner unit of some description on his desk because he is a smoker. moved it to the other side of the room and all was good again.

Does it do anything when you bump the desk hard though, Pauli? I've seen aperature grille monitors show slight distortion when jarred - the little vertical wires inside might not have been pulled tight enough in the monitor that udonoogen has.

If it only does that when you shake it, don't shake it then. My 955df screen will jiggle a tad if I smack the table under it, but that is just from the vibrations.

Well, I haven't tried to bump my desk REALLY hard, but normal tapping and bumping causes no distortion in my monitor.

I have two large loudspeakers approximately eight feet from my Sony Trinitron. I get the same effect at higher volume. After playing around with it, I decided it's simply the sound energy causing it. I recommend some good headphones.
