Did decent on the English portion (18/20) but only scored (10/20) on the math section. I feel so stupid.

3.9 GPA/H + 10th grade

:(

I just forgot how to solve some of the simplest problems. One of which was 3 1/4 minus 2 1/8. I've done this a thousand times, but somehow managed 10/8 - 8/8 = 2/8 but I guess I did something wrong, gah.

I missed almost 60% of school between grades 5-8, so perhaps that has something to do with it. O.M.G HOW CAN I COMPETE WITH MY IVY COUSINS?? This is bulls**t.

:(

This thread became a train wreck, resulting in needing time off to recover from the incident. -DrPizza

You had to break it down? I just did it in my head. 1/4 - 1/8 = 1/8... 3-2=1... 1 1/8.

Guess I'd be an excellent soldier.

I'm not taking that, it requires a bunch of stupid personal info I cannot be bothered to fake.

I did it the quick way in my head first, then i broke it down for the OP so he can see what he did wrong :p

Congratulations Trell, you pass 5'th grade math. You are amply qualified to be a bullet catcher.
Now you just need quicker reflexes. When you can compute the square root of 1 1/8 to six decimals places or better faster than a bullet can reach you from where its fired, you will be fast enough to dodge bullets.

The next lesson will cover imaginary numbers and phony statistics.

For the record, the test is somewhat retarded. There's very little in the way of math hat is actually tested, and much of it is based upon critical reasoning as opposed to arithmetic principles. I think you might be pleasantly surprised if you were to take the actual test.

And btw, if you're considering enlisting I highly suggest you keep the AF at the top of your list. Once you delve into that, insist that your recruiter tell you about the AFSC 9S1X0. He might balk as it isn't a normal AF job, it's what's called an "identifier." The specialties it encompasses range from working at NORAD on highly technical applications to applied geophysics. Take a peek here and see for yourself. It's described as the best kept secret in the AF, and I'd tend to agree with that since I wasn't aware of it when I enlisted (and I wish I was.) Fwiw, I love my job (radar) and there are several others out there that I'd highly recommend as well. PM if you ever want to chat about it.

As for those who describe serving as an enlisted member in the military as a "bullet catcher", calm down; it isn't all bullet catching. Hopefully our friend here won't bother wasting his time with the army. Navy, go for it. Marines, you'd know if you were the type. AF, best of the bunch as it has all the perks of the Navy without the 270 days a year of male-to-male bunking conditions.

Good luck with your endeavors!

3 1/4- 2 1/8 simplified = 3 2/8 - 2 8/8 - borrow from the three and 8/8 to 2/8, which equals 2 - 2 and 10/8 - 8/8 = 2/8...?

omfg.

No, I have no intention of joining the military. Just felt like taking the test to see how well I would score (everyone here said they did pretty well, and most people on pn are stupid....so....).

I feel so cheated.

I took the ASVAB test in High School. I think I scored a 78 or something. The test from what I'm told pretty much indicates where they will place you. I was told you pretty much have to score a upper 90 to get anywhere in the Nuclear Program for the Navy. That program is so small that a 90 may be too low though.

A little mean, eh? Perhaps you forgot this:

http://students.ou.edu/D/Willi...er-1/images/prozac.jpg

Anyways, can anyone link me to some general math resources? I've tried webmath but it wasn't that helpful.

For the record, I'm more capable and agile in spelling and mechanics than you will ever be.
Whatever grammatical error you manage to find is out of apathy, not idiocy.
SO I would really appreciate if someone could tell me what I'm doing wrong in the problem.

Ditching the whole numbers, you have 1/4 - 1/8. CD is obviously 8, but I honestly forgot how to convert....ugh.

Jesus then they asked me to convert Celsius into Fahrenheit and I totally forgot that formula. I feel like a retard. If I was a retard, at least I'd have an excuse.

Hopefully our friend here won't bother wasting his time with the army.

Is everyone in the AF as arrogant as you, or just the ones who got stuck behind a radar screen? Are you Doing Something Incredible yet?

A person like me with an ego the size of a beach ball cannot deal with juvenile lackings such as these. Help. Me. :(

Probably, yes. Incredible? No :)

I'm sorry if I came across like an asshole, I'd definitely like to take back how harsh my original comment sounded. In fact if I were to denigrate someones committment to service at it would probably be people like me who have undeiably easier jobs than most in the Army who really do earn their paycheck. If I had to rephrase the point I was trying to make it would be that if this guy were to elect to serve in the AF I think it would be more directly beneficial to him to do so considering that most jobs in the AF are not combat oriented and have much clearer path towards capitalizing on the technical experience gained in the service.

Of course that's merely my opinion, but to substantiate it a little further I'd like to offer that in the brief time I spent as a head hunter prior to my enlistment I had an extremely difficult time helping Amry folks transition out of the militry into decent employment. I didn't have the same trouble with AF or Navy folks, quite the opposite in fact. That's partially what motivated me to opt for the AF.

I hope I've been able to clarify my position a bit, and again, please accept my apology for sounding like an asshole in my orignal comment.

I don't know how long that test is, but the real ASVAB is pretty long. Lots of easy questions, but I completely messed up on the mechanical part. "What kind of saw would you use for cutting dry wall?" Hell if I know.
