Sure it's worked, but how much respect do they deserve for that attitude? I'm not too impressed.

I am impressed.

Moto and Verizon did EVERYTHING in their power to sell Android as legitimate. Verizon especially didn't want to be seen as selling second class products to they beat us to death with DROID!

And they failed.

But where they failed, Samsung succeeded. So much so that they now have their own brand that is pretty independent of Apple, with their own fanboys, UI, etc.

I think Samsung's piggyback ride was a genius move. Steve Jobs sold the world on mobile devices but Samsung matured that market. They had to pay Apple, what, like $1.5 billion? And from that they got in return billions more and control of the Android market.

Now I don't want Samsung to get too big and act like they can do without Gapps or something Amazon-style, but what they have done so far is pretty amazing.

You can really see the results on tablets. They offer year-after-year the worst tablet value and still sell a ton of them. Their brand really puts them over the top.

You guys just keep repeating the same thing over and over again right? The gold iPhone was rumored months before the release. Even if the gold GS4 was in Samsung's pipeline, you think they would've come out showing off the gold GS4 if it weren't for Apple? 2 days after the A7 processor, Samsung comes out and says the 64-bit Galaxy is coming soon?

This isn't an argument about who's first. This is about how Samsung seems so obsessed with what Apple's doing and having a "me too" mentality. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Apple doesn't copy. They copied the notification drawer, and widgets, and quick toggles. Did they come out and make a big deal about it and act go "Hey Android users, we have a notification drawer too!!!!" Samsung just screams desperate. Sure it's worked, but how much respect do they deserve for that attitude? I'm not too impressed.

I think your bias come through if you see it as 'screams desperate'. Frankly I think Samsung's goal is to give no other competitor any breathing room when possible. A phone comes out with the S800? Samsung will update a 3-4 month phone with a S800 version. Someone has a popular gold phone? We'll have one too. Now whether they're successful is another thing, but they certainly don't like giving any competitor any time in the sun alone.

What you see as desperate I see as staying hungry. Certainly when I use the Note 3, I don't see any screaming desperation, just the best phone IMO in the market today.

And yes, that's how people here go to a store, not to buy an iphone or a galaxy phone or an experia, but a phone. So they make decision in 15 to 30 minutes balancing between price, size, specs, camera and look and get a samsung phone because that nice lady showed them what and how they can do things in the device, while other brands are still in the shelves without human contact.
That's no different in developed countries. (I assume the U.S. is considered one) Most folks know what they are going to get before entering a store, or it's a 30 minute affair. It's only us the nerds that sit here and talk to death about this and that about phones. I mean, I've picked my current car in less than an hour upon entering the store and the car costs 100 times more than a phone. Sometimes I wonder if my priorities are messed up.

Most consumers have limited knowledge and lack desire/resources to study every single product they purchase. That is the same in developed countries and developing countries. Free-market has its limits.

It's a bit of an empty discussion either way. What's important is what you bring home in the box. All the weird Internet arguments about who was first, or who copied who are completely meaningless to the end user.

I find that the galaxy tab 7 is the worst best selling android tablet. I gave mine away to my son (it was a tab 2 7") because it was horrid. Now, grant you, I love samsung and have an S1, s2, s3, and s4 as well as a note 3, and I despise apple with great passion, but no, samsung tablets prior to whats new NOW, were horrible.
