This is the bare essentials:

P4 1.6ghz or higher
256mb ram or higher
30gb HD or higher
14.1"screen or higher
DVD drive
Built in 56k/NIC

Must be Toshiba or IBM. My brother custom built one at IBM.COM with the requirements above and it came out to be around $1,300-1,400. But I think I can find a much better deal. What are some places?

what model was that? i think that sounds like a really good price for an IBM... unless it's like 10 pounds or something 😛

If you custom built it at IBM.com. then yeah, you can get a cheaper price. IBM's cost more than most. Dell can "build" something like that for $1000, provided the IBM he configured had weak graphics. Just go to toshibas website and take a look.

damn

you missed that staples / HP deal a couple months back. that was one of the sweetest laptop deals ever. and it was easy to get, it wasn't one of those twister type deals that are hard to get.

you can still get a pretty good deal. hp / staples has a $200 instant rebate and a $100 MIR if you customize one on staples website. check it out.

i checked the link again and the only component the link won't allow you to upgrade to meet those specs is the 30 gb hd.

but you can get a combo DVD-CDRW and an ATI radeon.

also it comes w/ Win XP PRO.

shoot, it looks to me like a much better deal.

Except when he asked me which laptops are good and I told him Toshiba and IBM. Now he's determined to get one 😉 If I had the money, I'd go with the HP though.

IBM ThinkPad > Toshiba laptop

Check out IBM's eBayStore, these are brand new IBM laptops sold directly from IBM, they're just a little old (a few months old) but the prices are very competitive.

ya.

imo, ibm's are clearly the best. but they aren't the best buy. it's hard to justify buying an IBM unless you really take the laptop on the road a lot. if your laptop is gonna take a lot of beating, w/o question an ibm. if you gonna use it at one place most of the time, then the HP's are pretty sweet.

i've got a toshiba and the thing is HUGE, it has a 15" screen so it can't help but be big, but god, i hate lugging that thing around, the case and all must weiigh like 25 lbs.

a website a friend of mine owns.

well, i gotta plug it. a friend of mine owns and runs this site. mb he'll have some good prices.

to be honest his prices used to be real low. he used to be close to the lowest all the time, but i heard recently that he was hit pretty hard by the changing economic climate. i haven't talked to him myself in about 2 years. 🙂

it's a p3. he wants a p4-1.6ghz at least. i guess the R series laptop i listed above is the best i could find. IBM is having a 10% off sale so I guess that's why it's that low. I just dont like how they dont list things like graphics card and the available ports (usb, etc.).

I'd suggest against low end toshiba laptops, I have one (Satellite 2600), and the keyboard is flimsy, and lack of ps/2 ports is annoying (though it has 3 usb ports). The LCD is only goes up to 1024x768, and 640x480 looks terrible in a stretch-mode fullscreen. Also, the video chipset, s3 supersavage doesn't have very good support (in windows or linux), not to mention that it isn't even close the zippiest laptop graphics out there.
