Good link to get you started on starting points for calibrating the tv, issues, etc for your model TV.

First thing I did was turn down the contrast and brightness. I also turned the color down a bit but I think I need to turn it down a little more.

I paid $250 for the stand. It is a 60" Slam Brands Nea Moda Evo 60" TV Stand. I'll post a pic of my system later if anyone is interested. The rest of my setup is a Harmon Kardon AVR500 receiver with Klipsch RF3 main speakers, an RC3 center speaker, SB1 surrounds and a KSW10 subwoofer. I have a Samsung 1080p DVD player w/HDMI output and I have a DirecTV HD DVR w/5LNB dish coming this Friday.

Good stuff. I can't believe they ship those TV's with the contrast/color up as high up as they do. My head hurt after 5 minutes of watching TV/playing games at the default. I'd borrow a DVE disk or something from a buddy to properly calibrate it though.

BTW, nice stand. :)

Yeah, my wife was happy to retire my old DIY audio rack. This one looks much cleaner and the whole setup takes up a lot less room than my old one did. Not to mention the set has a much much better picture.

BTW-I chose this stand because it was one of the few that my center channel speaker would actually fit in.

Can't wait for that HD DVR though! ;)

I have an HL-S5087 too. Eliab's starter settings are excellent!

It'll look awesome. :) I'm only doing HD channels through OTA at the moment since I plan on moving (we have FIOS, with HD channels now, but since we dont pay for a HD package they only broadcast @ SD on those channels)...but god, I can't ever go back to regular SD TV. :) Congrats though.

PS - did you pay $300 for ur HD DVR, or were you able to sweet talk them into getting you a deal?

Nice :D. I really enjoy my Samsung 46" DLP and even without extra speakers, it still sounds great (it's in a smaller room, so extra speaker-age isn't as necessary).

Next think you need is a HTPC!

Link?

He means the DVE disk, not the stand. I don't think I'd trust a $1700 TV on a $17 stand. Would you? :p

Heh heh...

I understood that.

Sorry for the confusion :p

I see people have already pointed you to the AVS thread, it is a monster.

To summarize:

- Disable iris in service menu
- Set gamma to 0 in service menu
- Turn off overscan in service menu (if you have a late firmware revision, mid december is what you're looking for... 12/11/2006 off the top of my head)
- Use eliab's recommended settings:

Digital NR - OFF
DNIe - Off
Mode - Movie
Contrast - 40
Brightness - 45
Sharpness - 0
Color - 45
Tint - G50/R50
Color Tone - Warm2

Get your hands on a calibration disc to go further, for instant gratification getgray is good (calibrate.tv).

I caused quite a stir in that thread when I discovered that my 6187 retained the overscan settings.

YoYo - out of curiousity - at least for my TV there's different settings per input. Would you recommend calibrating the TV using that disk, and setting those settings for all inputs? Just curious. Thanks :)

AVS kicks ass. :) I have yet to find a really good calibration setting for my TV though. (Not that series)

PS - how do you access the service menu? I've never opened my instruction book. :(

You should have ordered from B&H

I find their prices to be about $200 cheaper than BB and CC. But, unless you live near NYC, I guess it's nicer to pick it up since you probably would lose lots of the savings in shipping.

How much did you pay for it?

I haven't had to deal with that since I use the same input on my own set for all sources. This would be a good question for AVSforum. I would assume that setting all inputs to the values you got for the DVD input would be better than leaving them stock, but I'm not sure if each would be the best they could be.

Ahh gotcha...I was just curious. Some of the defaults are terrible on the Samsungs...the contrast/brightness is jacked so high it made my head hurt after about 5 minutes. Thanks for the 411. :)
