Okay, I REALLY have to get into commercial acting...

A few of my breakdancing friends went to a Skittles audition last week. They're doing a commercial featuring bboys, and had an open call...

Last night, two of them (including my close friend's little brother) found out they'd been hired.

My friend's 18-year-old brother (high school dropout, has never worked a day in his life, does nothing but smoke pot all day, but is a VERY talented breakdancer, one of the best in the world) will be making approximately $60,000 (total, including residuals) for two day's worth of shooting. If they decide to use him for another commercial, he'll pull in $120,000.

Oh. My. God.

Another one of my friends recently did a commercial in which he had three (count 'em, 3) lines of dialogue. Deposit? $80,000.

I should've quit high school and saved over $100k in college tuition to focus on bgirling.

Yeah...if you have any type of speaking role in any big budget commercial or movie will get you big bucks. Yet they pay the people who do all the labor crap. I guess that's show business.

Apparently not, none of the bboys that got the commercial have any experience in commercialized entertainment whatsoever. I'll ask them about it tonight.

One bboy (Oscar) who isn't the best but an excellent self-promoter made $100,000 this year ($60k after taxes, maybe). He's 21, didn't graduate from high school, gets paid per flip in the movies/shows he does, and works maybe half the year max (more than most because of the movies)...

No...you don't need to be in the SAG if you are just doing spots. He probably doesn't need any experience because all they need him for is what he can do. He isn't acting so no acting experience needed.

You need to put yourself in the position. Thousands of try outs, practice, failure, failure, failure then one day you will hit it. So much compitition. My sis is moderatly famous and she's 23 but she started at 4 and winning Miss Jr california helped her. No I won't tell who.

Poorly = $50,000+ ?

The "big names" do a fraction of all the commercials out there... advertising is a hugely profitable industry (think about how much a 20-second slot during the Super Bowl costs), and $60k must be pennies to them. I'll see if I can find some links on Monday... the money is tempting...

Trust me. They do not pay poorly. Working in the movie/commercial/television business has opened my eyes on how much money flows through these places and how much people get paid. Its ridiculous. The hard part is getting there. Why do you think there are so many who travel from god knows where and come to Hollywood.

How do you find out what look or style that these people are looking for? For example it seems like b-boying is the hot thing right now, how do you go about finding whats needed?

Commercial actors are usually members of AFTRA or SAG.

Many of them do get paid a lot of money to do the commercials and it requires very little work.

Yet they pay the people who do all the labor crap.

Not really. I don't know what your definition of crap is, but if you can make it in the commercial world, you can make huge amounts of money for very little work and that's not exclusive to actors.

I know of commercial editors that get billed out at $3500 a day to edit a commercial. There's TONS of money floating around that industry and everyone gets a piece. It's not always as big as someone elses, but when is it ever?

Update... Jolly Rancher commercial filmed. 2 days worth of work, 4 hours a day. He chose the "buy out" option, which doesn't pay residuals, but will give him a one-time payment of $36,000. Damn. That's more than I make in a year, and I work 9-6, 5 days a week... *sigh*
