If anyone read another note I posted in this forum, I was trying to set up ICS using 2 machines (both on win2k), cable modem, hub (linksys 5port workgroup hub) and 3 nics.

I read the homepclan guide and the practically networked guide but ended up with this problem.

1. Set up 1 NIC in the Machine that will share the inet connection. It talks to the cable modem with no problems. I can get on the web and surf.

2. Added 2nd NIC to same machine to set up the LAN. Assigned it to 198.162.0.1
subnet mask 255.255.255.0 (as per practically networked guide)

3. Added 1 NIC to second machine (client) and set it's ip address to 198.162.0.2
subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and gateway to 198.162.0.1

Now after rebooting and checking all connections, I end up with this problem.
When I try to ping the second machine from the main one (one with the inet connection), it times out. When i ping from the second to the main, the two computer icon in my systray blinks and indicates that it received some packets (if you hold your mouse over it) but the request times out. This leads me to believe that the client machine can send packets to the main but the main can not send packets out to the client.

I have window98 on another drive for the main machine so i swap out the drives and boot into 98 for the main machine. Follow the same setup leaving the client machine alone.
Now when I ping to and from the main to client, it works fine! BUT the Internet Connection Sharing does not seem to work.

Did I miss something. Can someone spell out the exact instructions to set up a lan for win2k professional and then set up ICS? I'll really appreciate it if someone could spell out the directions to me because I read both of the more popularly recommend guides in the forum and nothing seems to work.

thanks dat
you can also email me the instructions if you like

the computer that is using the connection from the cable modem/dsl line has to have a second network card in there to talk to your internal network. did you do that? (i.e. if you have 1 server and 1 workstation, you would need 3 network cards).

oops sorry edited my original post.
yes i have 2 nics in the main machine. 1 to connect to isp and the other for the lan.

bump!
I know this is probably a simple setup but for whatever reason, I am at my wits end.
