Okay, I finally bought some good ram

Well, guys, I ordered a gig of Buffalo Tech. PC3200 ram last Friday (the stuff that was Winbond CH-6 not too long ago). When I installed it, it wouldn't even run 200 mhz at 2.5-3-3-11, with 2.90v vdimm! How screwed up is that? So, I called newegg today and told the guy that he could have it back, since it wouldn't do what it is rated to do. Now, ram prices have dropped a little at newegg recently, and I went and looked at Mushkins offerings. And I just couldn't help myself. I ordered a gig of their 2-2-2 "Special" BH-6. It's my fault that I didn't get in on the BH-5 when it was around, so I had to pay through the a$$ for it, but I don't think I'll regret it. Anyone here have any of this ram? Shouldn't it compare pretty closely to the BH-5, as far as speeds, and timings at those speeds? Hell, I'll more than likely just run it at whatever frequency it will run 2-2-2-11 at. Maybe it'll do those timings at 210 (has fingers crossed) Can you guys with BH-5 run 2-2-2-5 at 210? Shimmishim or Thugs?

I couldn't see paying that much for ram. Yea the timings increase performance "some", but not that much. I just bought 2GB of ram (4x512) a few minutes ago. That would have killed my budget, so I got some "less expensive" ram. Long as I can run 200MHz I don't really care.

Hope you really can "see" a difference (other than what bench mark numbers show you) with that ram.

well,
the intel boards are a much different animal, but to answer your question: yes 2-2-2-5 210fsb on 2.7v / 220fsb on 2.8v.

That sounds fine to me, Thugs. Even 210 at 2-2-2-11 would be awesome. If I can get it to run those timings at 220, you won't be able to get me to stop smiling. Now I just have to wait until Friday gets here.

Well, ram timings increase performance with Intel and AMD, but it doesn't seem to hurt the Intels quite as much, assuming you don't have to go all the way up to 3-4-4-7. And what the heck, this is the last ram I'll be buying for quite awhile, I might as well get good stuff, right?

Latencies are very important with Intel as well. They make a heck of a difference only since Intel bus goes all the way to 300 much easier than AMD, it is impossible to keep latencies low on 1:1.

I think Anand or toms did a review of this special ram. I think it was concluded that it could do at least 223-11 up to 225 or something, but im not very sure.

Yes, I read these reviews. At most I saw a 2% increase. On average, the increase was less than 1%.

The conclusion statement says it all to me. Toms - Conclusion - Consider Carefully

My take is, unless you're usning the Pentium and doing lots of "FILE COMPRESSION" :roll: well, I don't see the need for the speed.

To each his own though.

So you think there's going to be a ~1% difference between running 12x210 at 2.5-3-3-11 (what my old ram did it at) and running 12x210 at 2-2-2-11? BTW, don't post links to THG around here, especially if you're looking for respect.

edit: But you're right about not needing the extra speed if you're a gamer, or a casual user, like most people are.

Toms benchies are just the same as all the rest. And no, I'm not looking for respect. Just because Tom has the personality of a "steamy pile" doesn't mean the "other guys" that actually do the work around there and post benchies don't know what they're doing. It's a very informative website, no matter what the "biased" community over here think.

Well, run some FPS benchies... and whatever else you use to measure your penis, er... uhmm.. system speed (just kidding! really! ) with some "before and after" results and judge for yourself.

Seriouly... For those who want the Most from their PC and have the bux to do it, there's nothing wrong with getting the top performance parts.

Myself, I have 4 computers to maintain, so doing such things makes it difficult to keep them all running at a "reasonably" fast pace.

Well, then I don't recommend you buy any ~$350/gigabyte ram. But it definitely sounds to me like the one with penis envy...uh, system envy... is you.

I don't find any issues running my BH-5 memory at 210-225 MHz 1:1 with 2-2-2-6 timings on an nForce3 150 motherboard @ 2.8 volts. I have both Mushkin Level II black PC-3500 and Corsair Twin LL PC 3200 1.1.

Sadly, the motherboard has had some problems and is now doing the RMA shuttle. I now have the trusty old 8RDA+ and XP 2100+ running with the Corsair memory. Runs 1:1 200MHz @ 2.7 volts @ 2-2-2-6 (although this board prefers (2-2-2-11) smooth as silk.
