I tried reading anands review of the cards, but I just don't get which is the better faster card for the $200 mark. Or why.. right now I am looking at a Evga 7900 or the asus 1950 both of which come in at $200. But which of these is the better value and the faster card? By the way I have no intention of doing sli or crossfire.

1950pro tops 7900gs on all benchmarks, tops 7900gt on most benchmarks. At the same price as a 7900gs, it's no contest, at the same price as 7900gt, it's close, but still 1950pro wins.

okay so I am comparing the 7900gt with the x1950pro at newegg. How close is close? because I have not enjoyed good success with ATIs drivers in my 9800.

You sound like you want to go nvidia.

If you do then go for it.

The X1950 Pro is still the better card though, and I've not had any trouble with either nvidia or ATI drivers in the past 3 years.

I agree, if you can't work ati drivers, pay a premium and get nvidia.

which would be the better card: 1950pro or the 7950gt? I've seen quite a few reviews in which the 1950 beats the 7900gt but I wonder how the 7950gt, with its higher clocks and more memory holds up. I game on a 1680x1050 screen and want to play at 4xaa and 8xaf if that helps to figure out which would be the winner.

I've had good luck with both drivers the last several years as well. I prefer ATI drivers at the moment, since I can install minimum drivers, and then use ATI Tray Tools. I have never tried ATI CCC yet...

I used to prefer ATI's drivers + ATT, until I actually started using my PC for more than gaming. Managing an HDTV connected to your card is hell using ATT. Half the time I can't even get video to display at the proper aspect ratio, even when a resolution of that aspect ratio is forced.

Each time a Catalyst version is released, I install them. Never once in 3 years had a problem yet. Just make sure to uninstall previous drivers cleanly first.

It isnt a matter of the drivers installing correctly.. its a matter of the drivers fixing one game and breaking another.. or the performance just plain tanking on some of the older games I play..
