I had an altercation with a co-worker (a verbal one) and he apologized to me on april 3rd (it happened on april 2nd).

THe whole deal is that people were in stress, and so was he. However he isnt an admin but he think he is. He is the 2D supervisor. This is the same guy who put a uplink into an uplink and then people start telling me that the network isnt working. Anyway I told him that as an Admin I have the rights to everything in this company. If I get a call at 9:30 in the night I better respond to it and not wait to call Joeseph to find if I can or cannot fix it.

He claims my work ethic is to fix things.. yeah it has been. I do my job effieciently, but when I do people like him start to complain. He even threatened my job that day, I told him to go go ahead and do so. Knowing the fact that there are people who like me. But then the CEO likes him a lot more.

Anycase this is the kind of politics that goes on. I want out and I am trying to find a new job. But so far its hard because I want a part time position. I used to do full time school and full time work and this guy claims I am not working hard enough. Just because he stays until 5 Am doesnt mean I have to.

anyway below is his email to me: How the heck do I rationally respond to this. I cant seem to.. it angers me that an idiot who knows crap about systems is trying to take over my job.

Manjul,
I want to apologize for raising my voice at you yesterday. It's not a good
feeling to raise one's voice at anyone, no matter what the reason. I felt
frustrated that you did not share my perspective on the importance of a
sensitive approach in expressing professional opinions in a more
constructive manner. That said, you were innocent in simply trying to help
Jaison with a direct request. The fact that Jaison did not consult Joseph
first was a separate issue that was not your responsibility, and also
innocent in simply trying to resolve a simple goal as fast as possible. The
attitude you attach to your work remains an issue to be settled. Achieving
technical goals with a disregard to the people around you is not most
important thing in this company.
Adam.

Eh?

So where is he in the chain of command?

<< Achieving technical goals with a disregard to the people around you >>

Is that a direct quote? And, if it is, what do you think he means by it? (i.e. Why would he say it?)

As a fellow admin, I don't think that this was the most tactful thing you could have said, nor is it an appropriate attitude to have. The admin that thinks he's god is the admin that everyone hates.

ehh...don't respond. He just wanted to make some stupid point about how you treat people. Since I don't know how you are at work and so forth, that's not really relevent.

Office politics are just a game. Forget about it and go on. Try to choose your battles. If you want to talk to your boss and make a big deal about it, make sure it is worth it. If not, forget about and do your job.

Also take the time to analyse what he is telling you... does your attitude need to change? Are you rude to people?

Adam is the only one who seems to have a problem with me in the company. The 3D super trusts me over the other admins, and the production crew trusts me too.
The problem is this, as we Jeff and I call it, Adam's the love child of the CEO. I mean the guy gets what ever he wants. The cisco 4006 we got (which we have not used to the maximum power capable) was got only because adam goes like I cant do my work without it. I let the guy install the cables into the network (just because he wanted to do it neatly and his own way.. like he wants it documented etc etc - as if we admins dont do that.. i had a network diagram that i use from way back). Anyway he starts plugging things in and somehwere in between he screws up. People start complaining and they ask him. He couldnt figure it out. Back then only Jeff and I were there (joesph has joined us recently) and it took me 2 seconds to fix it.

THe other people let him do it only because he so wanted to do it. But he doesnt know anything about networks. He put an open hole thru the firewall. I had to change that password. The company requires supervisors to have passwords, but when superviorsors dont know crap and they leave a gaping hole in the network then what am I to do.

As the senior most admin (by the time around - joesph is the oldest of the group - so I guess he gets the senior admin status - i dont care about that title) for the longest time i know the systems by the back of my hand. Other people dont seem to have a problem with me. It seems adam has the liking for power, and I am the only one who wont stick my butt up in the air to get fscked.

As per my work ethic, everyone seems to like me. I get the job done. THough these days due to politics and the fact that jeff and joesph can take care of most thing I am not there all the time. But the fact is that I could be. But then there is nothing for me to do. Cause adam wants to do everything, he only calls us when something goes wrong. When jeff joined this company, adam made him do everything from getting price quotes to doing system builds. I for a long time have been washing my hands of 2D unless necessary. Anyway I told him this wont last and adam will stop asking you. Sure enough a few months down the road that happened, now all jeff does all day is surf the web. Joesph is his new toy.
This guy has a powertrip and I dont seem to like it because it interfers with my job. He has a job as a 2D admin, he should be sitting in front of the monitor working in aftereffects trying to get the projects done on time, and letting the true admins do the work. Somehow 2D always delays a project claiming not enough time, yeah the 2D super is surfing the web trying to see what new stuff he can get for himself. The guy if he was working in AfterEffects we would have got the ER shot done on time and not 12 hrs delayed.

I feel my work ethic is good, though it might need a bit of tune up (cause i dont go in often) but other people respect and trust me.

I think I should make it clear why the argument started.

You see we open a stargate in canada. If you search the archives I had asked if any people were in vancouver that could help if necessary. Well I wish I could have used someone there but you see adam didnt think it was worth it and that system made its way back to So.Cal.

Anyway basically the night before the argument Jaison calls me up at 9:30 and says we cant install NT, Jeff and Joesph have been trying to install it for the last 12 hrs and cant do it. So I said okay, I walk him thru (there was a problem with NT install with the SCSI card onboard so I had to take things out to install the OS). An hour later NT was installed, and they proceeded to install teh video drivers and other drivers. The network card wasnt installed but otherwise everythng worked fine.

Fast forward to the next morning I get blasted by adam for getting a system up without him knowing about it. I told him that anybody competent could have installed it (indirectly blaming joseph - yes I did that, but the guy was working 12 hrs trying to get it installed and he has an MCSE). Anyway then they try getting the NIC up and it wouldnt. Joesph blamed it on being ONLY XP compatitable. now I had got it working before on a similar system with NT drivers. He said there were no NT drivers for that NIC. Well there were. So they went and got anotehr NIC and it was an Intel card again. Anyother manufactuer would have worked. Obviously it wouldnt install cause the Bus Mastering Drivers for NT were not there and that card wouldnt work. I told them get an SMC or Dlink card and get it working every thing else works. Anyway scrap it to work on that system and decide to take one of the other machines available to run WinNT on. I said I will try getting it up myself. I did get the system up again properly but the NIC wont install without the bus mastering drivers. I couldtn find the NT drivers (which I had on hand at one time). Anyway I told them to get an anotehr card from another manufactuer and it will work. Well that was done a couple of days back and it worked but that system was brought to So.Cal because adam didnt know it was working.

Anyway while they were installing the other system, they needed a specific SCSI driver. Adam in his brainy mode decides to put the wrong drivers (SCSI alright but the wrong type) and it wouldnt work. They kept downloading stuff off the web and couldnt get it to work. Finally Jeff asked me and I said oh yeah its here. Point it to a local server and they get the right drivers. I had encountered the problem before and knew how to solve it. I gave it to jeff who gave it to joesph and who ftp'ed it to canada where they got it and installed it. Had I not told them about that driver they would have searched all of adaptec's site and still wouldnt have found it. The driver is an old driver and only one type works. It took me a while to track it down when I first encountered the problem.

Anyway adam was there when joesph was ftping and jeff told me that adam gave a sort of gruff "huff" sort of sound.. I mean I helped the guy and I like working on a team but only if you ask me for something. And even after that the guy goes like I have no work ethic.. come on... If I didnt I wouldnt have helped them fix that problem right away. They would have still been searching for that driver if I hadnt helped.

Now that you know the story.. you can maybe give a wya I can answer to this guy;s email. I got to do it..

No, you don't, and I wouldn't. This clown is just trying to bait you into doing something stupid that he can use against you. Don't fall for it!! If you feel you need to respond, do it mano a mano, where it will be just you and him.

A guy who does not know the difference between a crossover Cat-5 and a standard Cat-5 should not be any kind of network admin. Period.
