Well... every permutation of string and finger patterns on the fret board would be every chord :p

*Announcement* Mucman's guitar quiz #6 will be up soon... and it's not going to be all Rush ;) *Announcement*

yes and no... in theory, those two are completely different things.
but in general practical sense, it doesn't hurt much to assume that they are the same.

as for guitar chords are concerned...
because of the limited # of strings...
at any given moment, you can only play 6 notes.

in theory...
that's 3 triads + 7th, +9th, + 11th.

for a full complete chord, you cannot go beyond 11th chord.
so ... technically, guitars cannot play a full 13th chord.

hence, you have lot less chords to memorize.

oh yeah... throw dimish & augmented, major/minor 7,9,11th...
i guess there's plenty for you to start learning.

:)

as for a chord list, i'd recommend that you learn the basic theory, so you're not just memorizing the finger positions.

hoihtah - I know note names, I can even read treble cleff. I'm a well established and a pretty damn good bass player who's been hired to do a few broadway shows. It's not like I'm totally stupid on the concept of a guitar and I'm just trying to be a dumbass about this. To make things easier and less painful on my wallet I was just looking for a site that could help me out.

Wow, that's a lot of chords...

But I agree that the theory of knowing when to play the chords is far more important than knowing all the chords. I fail in both cases, but I've only been playing for a year.:D
