Okay, convince me to go with Win2K

I've been relatively pleased with Win98SE, but I figure it would be good to at least try out Win2K. What are the major differences between 98SE and 2000? Advantages/disadvantages?

all in all just another set of windows...

other than you don't need to boot everyday if you want your box to be on for a couple weeks...

some of your favorite good old apps won't install, or it crashes after a forced installation...

pay more green$ to MS...

convinced? - how about not being bored for at least a couple months...

new techies in win2k - like xml capability, soap(not for laundry, yeah right)...

If you weren't warezing it the day the RTM came out like me just so you could escape from dual booting 9x/NT4, then it's probably not your style.

Well when properly configured you will be freed of the BSODs that often plague Win98.

Three and a half months now, and that was only cause I added more hardware that made me reboot. I love this thing. If you are stable in 98 then stay there, but what do you consider stable? I couldn't ever run my computer this long before. I am going to let it go and go and see how long this thing lasts. This is great, and yes I do use it. Every single day. Especially on this forum, and gaming.

Other people use your computer? Give em a new profile with username and password and they can customize to their hearts content. Want to encrypt a hard drive? NTFS. You can still do most of these things that I am mentioning with 3rd party software, except for the NTFS thing. Careful though. NTFS is win NT/2000 only so you won't be able to dual boot your computer if you do it.

I can't believe I actually waited to get the OS.

It all depends on what you want. I believe that MS has finally stepped up to the plate and delivered two decent OS's. I use 2000 at work, it seems to be stable, but if a user needs to use programs like Terminal Server they have to be added to the local machine as a poweruser. I use 98SE at home, because I am a gamer. If you have an always on connection to the net, I would use 2000. This would be more difficult to hack for a beginner. If you search some of my other posts, you will find that I am messing with redhat 7 ATM too, and that looks like a real OS (I have used it before, jsut not with my GF2MX).

I am an expert at hosing my OS, due to the fact I am constantly downloading new programs to try. I am intimately familiar with the Win98 install cd: however, since I went to 2K ( about 4 months ago) my system has help up like a rock 🙂

hmm...it's uncommon to see this many people saying stay with win98.

IMHO if you hardware will run it efficiently def. go with W2K.

I went to Win2k for 2 weeks. Now I'm back at Win98SE...hahahaha what a joke of an OS Win98 is...I'm taking tommorow off work so I can rid myself of Win98SE and put Win2k back on. After using Win2k win98 seems so bad hehehe 😀

Look at it this way Win2k = NT 5.0, microsoft is replace home users with Win XP which is just NT 5.1, basically win2k with a really ugly cosmetic makeover.

Win2k is an excellent OS, most likely the best OS MS has produced.

I too am a Win2K fan, but I would suggest you test (on another system or on you existing system **without** touching the Win9x install) Win2K. If you've never done anything on the NT side of the world, there will be many habits Win2K will force you to break.
