please link us to something that's gotten anywhere near the praise of the R8 and beats it in styling.

top gear seems to like it a lot (may have to crank up the sound)

how does the 911 GT3 compare with the carrera 2s? (i have no idea)

edit: and on styling the GT3 has nothing.. looks like a total sports machine rather than combo track + DD... IMO anyway 😛

GT3 is much quicker and better handling.

only audis 2 door cars look good, especially the S5(waaay overpriced)
all their 4 doors looks plain and old

What I find odd is that people bash American autos for having inefficient engines, however this thing only provides 500HP in a V12, even though the cylinders are most likely smaller than that of the 6.2L V8 in the ZR1.. Though I will say the vehicle is dead sexy. The TTS on the other hand? Meh, not my personal tastes though I can definitely see where many people would find it very attractive!

Only the ignorant crowd will call an engine inefficient because of its displacement. They obviously do not understand the concept of OHC and OHV.

That particular R8 is a diesel making 500hp. Diesels have pretty much the opposite hp/tq trend of gasoline engines.

it's a *DIESEL* and it has 740 ft-lbs of torque from incredibly low RPMs. and it's vastly more efficient than a petrol engine of similar power/torque.

Haha, do you have any idea what you're talking about or do you just talk out of your ass. Please show us some VW's with OOOO on the front. The cars aren't even close. You must be talking about Japanese "luxury" brands.

You misunderstood my post. What I was saying is that cars like the Audi A4/A6 are pretty much eggy-shaped blobs like the Passat. If you put the OOOO badge on a Passat instead of the VW, I'd bet that most everyone wouldn't even notice the difference.

The Japanese brands don't look very similar IMHO. Compare Lexus to Acura, the cars are vastly different in appearance. Ditto Infiniti.

Lexus = blobby smooth
Infiniti = edgy with lots of odd angles
Acura = edgy with pretty smooth angles

Car looks are in the eye of the beholder anyway, but even so, I'm speaking honestly, not 'out of my ass'.

Compare this VW

to

this Audi

I mean, beyond the grille, the cars look like they might share the entire platform.

The engine performance is impressive, but the fuel economy isn't what I thought it would be. After all, that is the whole point behind it IMO... which is moot in the first place, you would think a person with the money to buy this car couldn't care less about the fuel economy.

A car such as this deserves a pure gasoline engine that likes to rev, not something that belongs in a Touareg...

They are the same platform. Both are the B6 chassis. Regardless the current gen Passat has been a failure, and looks terrible. The current gen A4 is the B7, and the ones coming out as 09's, I think, will be the newer face-lifted B8 based cars. So the new one should differentiate itself more so from its VW siblings.

Also, comparing VW and Audi on looks is fine, if you compare it to Acura vs Honda, or Toyota vs Lexus. They all share some common themes, but of course different makers all have different design characteristics. I doubt someone would mistake an Audi for a BMW or Merc, the same way they wouldn't mistake a Lexus for Infinity or Acura. But within "the family" it is definitely more difficult, but that is not just confined to VW/Audi.

Annnnyways, the new R8 TDI is the hawtness!!!! <3

Thanks for the confirmation! I know I wasn't crazy to think that Audi (4s and 6s) looked like VWs 🙂

Belongs to a Touareg? Are you kidding? The Audi R10 with V12 TDI engine has been dominating 24hrs Le Mans

Of course they are "dominating' Le Mans with some interesting advantages under the rules.

The concessions afforded diesel-powered cars at Le Mans this year are numerous. Compared with a turbocharged gasoline-fueled car, the diesels enjoy a 50-percent larger displacement limit, a 52-percent larger intake restrictor, and an absolute boost pressure limit nearly twice as high. Additionally, the diesels are allowed variable nozzle turbines in their turbochargers. It is also rumored that Audi successfully lobbied to raise the minimum weight to accommodate the R10's massive powerplant.

There is no way a diesel could compete with equal displacement and boost pressure.
They are cheaters.

At the beginning of the 2006 season, homologation rules for LMP cars were changed, for the LMP1 class, an increase in minimum weight from 900 kg (1984 lb) to 925 kg (2039 lb) was mandated. While officially this is to allow closed top prototypes to run with air-conditioning (as this would have added weight over open tops cars), some have speculated that this done at the behest of Audi to allow the R10 to be competitive.[4]

so if the rules were bent to make the R10 "competitive" why does it absolutely dominate? competitive means there's a decent balance... but the R10 blew everyone away.

The rules were not merely bent , they were rewritten for Audi.
Does 50% increase in displacement and nearly twice the boost mean anything to you?
Not to mention the increase in weight.
I believe if you give Porsche a 50% displacement advantage and twice the boost, they will blow the Audis off the track.

Porsche is free to do that with a diesel, if they'd like.

Ok? The R10 is a race car (sounds phenomenal btw). They put this engine in the R8 when a Touareg would benefit more from it because it can actually tow something.

I think their idea is to put this engine, for which people would normally think they only belongs in trucks or SUVs, and show people diesel can do more than just tow. And show that they can be used for everyday things, and still be desirable. Seeing how diesels are thought of as slow, what better way to show that a diesel is quick than to throw it in a supercar?
