thanks for the cover, duvie...

i just have to mention that this config, although superior cpu wise, is already $100ish over the goal and has weak onboard sound instead of an audigy zs...

i was expecting flamage for posting heresy... it's just kind of like when my wife talks about redecorating and shows me all the stuff on sale... the we go to the store and she finds stuff that she likes a lot better, but seems to be a bit more pricy than the original items were...

To those who claim that self building is cheaper, have you truely done a fair cost analysis. The only way I see building ones own computer is cheaper is if OS is left out and intangables like warranty are ignored.

Note I have both built customs systems for myself and my clients and ordered dell's (I am on one right now) and for 95% of cases Dell is actually the best choice.

dude, you're getting a dell...

and you'll probably be happy with it...

as long as u just use it to do stuff and don't run any benchmarks and stay away from tech sites...

good luck...

IMO anything beats a Dell, they use the worst components, proprietary designs that aren't upgradeable, and have horrible warranty service. I would buy a used computer off of eBay before I would buy a Dell POS. Yeah they have great coupon deals, but you get what you pay for.

IMO indeed.

Dell does not use the worst components.

Granted the motherboard are not standard form factor, however even the power supplies are now standard not to mention memory, CPU hdd etc. Also dell supports 3rd party upgrades in that they do not void your warranty. Furthermore I personally have found their warranty excellent IE overnight shipment of replacement including return shipping.
Try that whith say an asus motherboard. YOu are on the hook for one way shipping and at least a 2 week turn around time. (If you RMA to asus directly)

As above Dell is not the end all be all, and in some cases other products do have their advantages, however if one knows where to look, Dell offers some very competative combos IE the recent dual core machine with 24" LCD for $1200.00

i can almost always do better from a performance/$$$ perspective... what changes the equation is overclocking... but it's never a certainty... and that i have easier upgradability and can watch for pieces that are on sale, etc...

GO with dell. They are the cheapest for a reason. THey make very slim margins and offer great prices, and frankly you can't beat that unless you self build.

Btw, try to order with only 256 memory and buy 2GB of ram from newegg. Then put them in. Installing ram is the easiest thing there is. Also, you can install your own hard drives. Just order the cheapest hard drive availible and then install another HD for 50 bucks with rebates. Not that hard IMO.

Overclocking adds costs as well though.

Time to troubleshoot, faster memory, better heatsink AS5 voiding warranty.

Certainly overclocking works for some but the price perfomance benefits these days from O/C are not as great as they once were.

Dude I even tried...cannot be had for under 2000.00....Your total of 1440 does not include the 2nd HDD right??? Either way a 40 % reduction means that system was regualrly 2400....I could beat 2400 dollars I could beat 2200..the total I had with 19" monitor, same vid card, 2gb of ram, network card, Audigy 2 and 5500es, etc was just at 2180 or so.....

The monitor alone is 350 bucks and you cant get that system for under 1000 with speaker and a 5.1 soundcard....

Get the Dell and use it as your starter to be able to build your next....

YOU CANT COMPETE WITH 40% off

You cannot beat that price even if you shopped to find the cheapest everywhere (non used) and built it...40% is HUGE!!!!

Oh yeah if you got it to within 1900 max the performanceof the 3800+ x2 still does not equate in performance over the cost. I dont know how Dell can do it...

By the way my total also included OS for those who wondered....

Ocing does add cost but honestly I dont skimp on the importnat items like power supply or ram ever so for me it adds nothing. However I spend 140 dollars to get a 3000+ winchester and clock it to 2.66ghz makes me feel good when an FX55 is 950+ at the time.....

duvie, to quote asok the intern: "u r the wind beneath my wings"...

now he can start a thread on gutting the dell; selling the mobo and chip; and slapping the rest of the pieces onto a x2 base!!! woohoo!!!

but don't start till tuesday, i have no conf calls on monday...

That price does include a second hard drive ( it has 2 160 gigs, one for files and stuff) and windows media center which is nice i guess

LOL can u actually do that tho? u mean id be able to somehow able to get a AMD X2 in there in the future? lol sounds interesting mabey ill think abt it lol just let me know when u have a conf call lol

$360+$80+$100 roughly, or $540 total. You could also sell the 830,mobo,memory you have. I don;t know how much you could get for it, but it wouldn't be that much less.

what the hell? thats it? u mean it would only take $500 dollars to turn that into a AMD X2 system? wow I can definatly see myself doing that in the future when I have to money and the need, but for now this deal is awesome/perfect for me. When i do decide to change those things tho (mobo, cpu, memory) would the new stuff work nicely with all of the other components i already have?

If the case and PSU are not proprietary, you are set ! worst case is another $100 for a Sonata case. And remember, you can sell the P4 and Mobo to some sucker who doesn;t know better, and it won;t cost you that much for the upgrade !
