i was recently about to buy a dell XPS but the people on this fourm have convinced me to go AMD. My 40% coupon for dell expires on the 30th but i wan to use it soon because theres a limit on how many people can use it (abt 3600). So basically im gonna check out an amd system, with ur help and compare the two to see which i want. Thiing is you guys know everything about this stuff, i dont. Now since i dont know anything abt AMD im gonna need help picking out the PC. The site im looking at is Ibuypower.com (good site?) I DO NOT want to buy parts, then build it, its just somehthing i rather not do, even if it cost me more, then id much rather go with dell. Ok THIS is the system im looking to customize and buy-

CLICK HERE TO CUSTOMIZE IT AND POST THE SYSTEM I SHOULD GET
unless there are other dual AMD systems on that site (is dual AMD x2 the way to go?). Now i need you people to guide me on which parts to get. I need to PC for gaming (bf 2, doom 3, half life2, F.E.A.R) and multitasking (encoding vids, photoshop, internet use, itunes, etc) so is the AMD X2 the way to go?

Ok here we go, i need to total system to be around 1400 or less no matter what (this is a gift from my dad btw)

Umm you already have the list of exeptable parts and prices. This looks more like an exam then help thing. Why don't you go through it and see if their is a combination of exeptable parts that is cheaper then the dell you drew up then ask us if it is a good combination. but to answer your 3800+ 4200+ question the only thing different is at defualt settings the 4200+ is 200MHz faster.

man, it would be so much better just to build one for yourself. a lot of those choices were just not good. i didnt like any of those power supplies. and a few other things really needed more choices.

how hands off are you?

stay with the 3800+, at stock its still noticebly faster than the 830
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum nForce4 Ultra Chipset w/7.1 Sound, Dual Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, IEEE 1394 PCI-E MB [+ $16] (but most of the mobo's are fairly interchangeable, this one should have good onboard sound if I remember though)
the 7800gt for 357 more
the ram price is fairly reasonable, your probably going to want 2048 MB [1024MB X2] DDR-400 PC3200 Memory Module Corsair-Value or Major Brand More Options [+ $195]
Enermax EG565P 535 Watt Power Supply [SLI-Ready] [+ $79]

I agree. The only way to do it is to build it yourself. I say just buy the dell, you aren't going to beat that price unless you build yourself.

Just an FYI, I built a system recently for less then the cost of the XPS - with 2 Gig of Ballistix RAM, a 3000+ processor running at 3800+ speeds, a 7800 GT and 500 Gig on two hard drives. Which would down right embarrass that XPS system in any game.

Imagine what you could learn?? Its really not that hard to put one together yourself.

I don't think it's possible to build a good X2 rig on that site under 1400 bucks. Let's make it clear, you have $1400 to spend on the X2 config or you have $2400 - 40%?

Edit: maths :)

Just get the Dell. You can't beat that price. You could probably get a similar performing AMD system for less if you built, and a better performing one for the same price - if you built.

As it stands, buy the Dell.

In that case you are much better off with the Dell system I would say.

Thats what I've been saying, you should be off ordering the Dell. You won't do any better unless your building the AMD equivelant rather then ordering it.

No its not that bad, its just not as good.

If you do buy the dell, see how much it costs to upgrade the Video Card, maybe 7800GT. That vanilla 6800 won't cut it for future games and it looks by your other post that video games is what you want this system for the most.

To those who claim that self building is cheaper, have you truely done a fair cost analysis. The only way I see building ones own computer is cheaper is if OS is left out and intangables like warranty are ignored.

Note I have both built customs systems for myself and my clients and ordered dell's (I am on one right now) and for 95% of cases Dell is actually the best choice.

BTW you should not crosspost.

Since the one in the CPU forum has more posts I suggest you pm a mod to deletet his one.

Meh, to build a nice system with a 3800+, you're going to need like ~$1900...

It'll be better than that Dell though :)
