Sounds like she's a little unclear on the concept. She had something she considers sex, but it didn't include full penetration. The other possibility is that someone else popped her cherry...

Failing that, you should at least have gleaned such basic information from conversations with your friends, unless the only people you hang out with are ridiculously deprived, introverted loners.
