Ok, why does my router kill the internet?

TallBill

When I go from the modem straight to the computer my connection holds strong, but when I go through my linksys wireless router, my bandwidth slows to about 25% of its capacity.

Is someone somehow leeching my wireless or something. I kinda doubt it, but maybe possible. Keep in mind, all other computers and devices are off, so why does my bandwidth take such a big hit?

I'm using a Linksys wireless G router with encryption.

To play games I have to frickin plug straight into my computer.

Wierd. How fast is your connection? Would have to be seriously fast for the lynksys to be the bottleneck... unless it's the new wrt54g v5, I hear those are terrible.

If you suspect someone is stealing your wireless, turn it off, and see if the problem goes away.

All sorts of reasons. Generally, on lower bandwidth connections (Cable/DSL) they aren't going to be affected much. But as evident on internal routing, routers generally take a BIG hit because of all of the NAT processing that's done on every packet, internal or not. Could be bad MTU, could be bad cable, could be bad router. Try different ports, etc. Are you using MAC filtering? Static IP's?

The problem is a bit too vague to toubleshoot adequately.

throw linux/iptables on there to see if it's a nat issue (my 2.6 ghtz "router" never slows down, but I don't do heavy downloading at home.

Its a WRT54 GC. Whats weird is when I plug it back in, everything is all fine and dandy for a bit. Then, at some point it just craps out.

Its a 3meg cable. Usually rates at like 2300-2800 Kb, then at some point it just goes to like 500-1000 Kb.

that might be signal strength/quality and it's dropping down to 2.5 or 1 Mbs.

try channels 1, 6 or 11.

I'm hardwired to the router on this pc.

On the Networking tab on both pc's I'm using like 0.1% of the connection.

oh, so no wireless involved?

heck, the only other thing I could think of would be excess features slowing it down. try resetting to default?

what is used to test/measure speed?

Just using toast.net to test speed, and I notice it when playing video games.. my ping quadruples sometimes when using the router.
