OK to mix Intel/ati or AMD/nVidia setups?

It won't work for sli or crossfire setuos, but its it OK to use a nVidia card with a AMD cpu/motherboard or a ATI card and a Intel chip/motherboard? As I understand, AMD and ATI are partners in some respect, and most setups with Intel seem to equip with nVidia cards. I am sure its possible, but is it more efficient and stanble not to mix the manufacturers up?

Not a problem at all.

Running a 4870x2 and a 4870 1GB in crossfire on a Intel P45 board right now.

No problems. There'd be hell to pay if Nvidia made their chipsets only work with Nvidia graphics cards. I have a Radeon 4870 running on an Intel P45 motherboard right now. At one point, I had an AMD X2 4200, an Nvidia 570 Ultra based motherboard, and an ATI video card in the same box. That was before AMD bought ATI.

Intel-ATI rig representing. Nvidia and Intel have been at each other's throats lately, not partners in any way actually, but it's true amd-ati might have some benefits, seeign that it's the same company.

Crossfire works with both Intel and AMD chipsets, SLI works (mainly) only with nVidia chipsets. That's the only limitation.
Also AMD own ATI, they are not partners, but the same company.

I've been using AMD/Intel setups for a while now....as well as the AMD/Nvidia rigs that I have in my collection.

Chipset makers want their products to be as versitle as possible (they sell more that way). I've had ATI cards in Nvidia based mobos and they ran great.

I have an Intel chipset motherboard that has ATI Crossfire support. I've been using nVidia GPUs in this system, but obviously no SLI (though no real interested in SLI anyhow).

Yeah, always thought it was ironic that Intel had better support for Crossfire (from their direct competitor) compared to SLI. Funny stuff.

Thanks for the posts. I had thought there would be some sort of licensing issue for using crossfire on a intel board because I never came across such a board in looking to build a system, only found sli on intel boards. And also thought there might have been some efficiency built into amd processors and chipsets when using an ati card.
