OK to enable "DMA Mode" in device manager?

I noticed that the little box "DMA Mode" wasn't checked when I examined my hard drive under the Win98 SE device manager. Is it safe to check it?

My system:
Asus P5A
AMD K6-2/450
Maxtor 20gig HD

I wonder why it wouldn't be enabled by default? I mean, can't Windows detect things like that?

It can mess up some older HDs, so for the sake of safety Windows doesn't enable it by default (at least 95/98 don't) while Win2K does on the other hand.
