my cars been sitting in the garage for a few days without an exhaust. it needs an oil change and i dont have anything better to do...so i wanted to get it done before i got it back on the road tomarrow. i understand how the oil thins when its hot, and how its probably a better idea to change the oil then..but is it really much worse if you try to ch ange it cold?

supposedly it gets particles circulating throughout the oil when you run it before you drain it. but in the real world nobody gives a rats ass and neither does your engine.

I wouldn't do it. Heating it up gets the oil flowing and all the dirt in the motor so you want a good drain to get the dirt out. If it's cold, you are only taking part of the dirt out and putting new oil in mixing it some of the remaining dirt. You are not gonna get all the dirt out but I would not do it cold.

and the oil filter does.... what now?

It traps dirt, sure, but you want to get all the dirt out you can. Dirt is what takes life away from a motor.
