I just got a Yamaha RX V673 had it for 3 days and the HDMI out failed.

I can return it NP but looks like I need to spend more to get a reliable one.

Need suggestions on either Yamaha or Dennon or something else that can be gotten from Amazon.

Would like to spend less but can go for $600 max.

Also would like this to be able to power speakers that need power to sound good.

What do you mean by this? Are they low Ohm? Low sensitivity? What speakers are they?

Are there other features that you need the receiver to have?

I have a coupe of BW towers that are not that good but some good BW book shelf's.
I don,t have the coin to get more BWs right now.
Just using a Pioneers Andrew Jones set know that sound good for the cost but will get better in the future.

The RX-V673 is a decent receiver. With any product DOA is a possibility.

It would be more helpful to know what speakers you are talking about.

I like www.accessories4less.com for refurb deals. Most people can probably get by with a receiver in the $300 range.

My 473 has been solid so far. Duds happen, that's likely what you got.

As far as speakers go I have a pair of B&W 683's and a pair of B&W 685" my grand son tour up the center channel.
I am using these right know to to get a 7.1 effect.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This is a whole set of these 4 towers a center and a sub.
They are not as good as the B&W but I am amazed at what they sound like for somthing that cost so little.
I would like to upgrade to B&W 685's all the way around and a better sub down the roaud but the receiver will come first.

The RX -V673 has a good bit of folks stating they have HDMI issues or other problems too at amazon

That link is for a single speaker. HDMI issues plague a lot of units. Those issues are different than something being DOA.

And two of these.

May try a phatom center to see how that work with them.

In my humble opinion the two main problems with receiver’s these days.

One, HDMI this adds a lot to the video and audio but it wasn’t developed enough to be reliable. I see more complaints about HDMI failing than anything else on AV receivers.
That or the manufactures haven’t followed the guidelines, used lower grade material or have poor Quality Control.

Second is heat, manufactures in some case’s haven’t took in consideration of the heat that is generated by the new video processors, and other components.
Just like PC’s Vid Cars and CPU’s they put out a lot more heat and need better cooling solution.

In short if this is the case why spend a lot on a receiver if you are prone to have a good chance of it failing shortly or a few months later. Evenr a year or two is not what you should expect.

The old componet and optical worked good just dosnt have the better audio and video that HDMI has.

It has nothing to do with HDMI itself. Yamaha, Onkyo, and I think a couple others had a problem with the boards themselves. It's a circuitry problem, more realistically QC, not HDMI sucks.

I've found that heat is user error. Many cram a receiver barely able to fit in a space with horrible ventilation and expect heat dissipation to miraculously work.

I've yet to have an HDMI failure on any of my receivers, incl. 2 NAD's and 1 Onkyo.

The Onkyo is my workshop/store house receiver and certainly isn't babied in the least.

Just got my Onkyo back from repairs. It was one week from being out of warranty and the HDMI went out. My Pioneer Elite 7.1 receiver from 8+ years ago is used daily and has never had issues. Unless you spend $800+, its a crap shoot these days.
