i get this sporadic rattling sound every now and again. it almost sounds like something is clipping the fins somewhere. or the wire is rapidly bouncing off the fins.

its definitely metallic and it comes and goes. i can make it stop by pressing a bit on one corner of the fan or sometimes by speeding up/down the fan.

i just swapped out fans to see if that was it and there doesn't appear to be anything rubbing up against the hs base. the fan seems to sit well although somehow i suspect the pathetic little clips they provide to secure the fan.

anyone have this before?

Perhaps your fans bearing is going? I've had that happen countless times with everything from PSU's to plain 20mm micro fans.

well, i don't think its the fans, both are new. the zalman seems to be fairing a bit better but when i put it in earlier it took about 3 minutes before the sound came back. now its gone, waiting , waiting to aggravate me again.

i think you're right yoda, it being the clips. they came already holding the stock fan which i had to remove to lap the base so maybe i bent them or something putting them back.

yeah, i know. believe me it was the last thing i wanted to do. 😉

but when reading up to find out which way the heat pipes should face i came across some posts regarding the problem with some concave bases. so i put a straight edge on mine to check and sure enough it was definitely not flat.

the first few strokes on the sand paper confirmed that. it was ugly. i guess they way they manufacurer it, mounting the heatpipes last, can lead to some warping of the base

you do know that most companies do not recommend lapping...just thought I would mention that!

If i were a manufactuare of heatsinks i too would discourage lapping.

Having read several tutorials on the subjet, not a one has offered up information on proper

lapping proceedure. Having worked in the diesel repair trade for over 30years has premitted

me to be party to the masters that do fuel system repair. Surfaces in the diesel fuel system

are measured in angstums of light. I was tought how to lap properly by a Master at fuel

system repair. I will post a thread w/o pics if you are intrested. A PM will do.

sure i'd love to have it for reference.

the heat btw isn't an issue. i'm at 270x10 1.44v on an x2 3800. finished my 24hr dual prime this morning and never broke 50c with the stock fan @ 2200rpm.
