Okay, i can dos ping a UT server for like a hour and get like not anything higher than 20ms. But then in UT my ping is like 50ms, which sounds about right but...Literally every minute or so, or less than that, my ping spikes to like 500 and stays up there for about 10 seconds before dropping. It literally does this a little less than every minute. I don't know what it is. I'm on a OC3 connect from SUNY-Albany that is pretty fast. I can upload very fast and download very fast. I'm also using a 3COM nic card, one of those that does onboard computations or something? Anyone know why it does this? Maybe it's my network card?

How big are the icmp packets you try to DoS this server with? How much data is being transfered playing the game? How many players are on when you DoS it? How many when you are playing? Are you doing these at similar times? How many hops to the server? Any bad links between you and it?

Just because you have an OC3 doesn't mean anything about all the routers and networks between you and the server. It's possible one of them is overload or has some poor setup that every minute lags the router and you get boned.

Although we had a UT server at work with everyone atleast 10Mb CAT5, server was 100Mb and some of the clients were too, but the pings never went below 50 which I thought really strange considering I get better pings in Q3 at home on my cable modem.

common sence brotha man!

when your pinging not as much data is flowing thou to as when you are actually playing in the game.
Well if the game has anything to do with half life i sy get the All Seeing Eye server scanner its for half life mods and its pretty acurate on the pings, players, flux, and lots a other stuff!
