This is a fax from the National Federation of Independent Business that my wife fetched from work.

TELL YOU STATE SENATORS-DEFEAT MINIMUM WAGE BILL
The Louisiana State Senate will vote on a two bad bills shortly. SB-32 by Senator Cleo Fields would enact a Louisiana minimum wage increase of $1.00 per hour over the federal minimum wage. The minimum wage in Louisiana would go from the current federal level of $5.15 to a new level of $6.15m and whenever the federal minimum wage is hiked, the Louisiana minimum would automatically be $1.00 higher. No other southern state has such a requirement. This would put Louisiana at a serious disadvantage to our neighboring states in the job market. It will increase labor costs and reduce employment -especially for younger, inexperienced and low-skilled workers. Please contact your state senator immediately and insist that they vote against this very bad bill!

Ok WTF! I understand this is probably directed toward small businesses, but can these people be more ruthless? Apparently these people don't have a wife that makes 6.50 an hour. (I make 7 an hour and I'm in school.) You will just have to trust me when I say we still don't make the bills after the best of managing finances. Yeah minimum wage is more than enough to live on apparently. I guess I've been eating ham sandwiches, with 3 bad wisdom teath that hurt desperately, for NOTHING! Apparently I was just making sure I had enough money in the bank for that new house when I decided to take my wife to a 5 dollar clinic downtown last winter when she had the flu. I mean, what was I thinking. I guess the reason I didn't have hot water all last week is because I don't know how to work a shower, not because I couldn't pay my gas bill. Look, I don't want to bore you with my rants, but I've been living in this crap for far too long to have no pity for these selfish fat cats ^&@%#@!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah and another thing, don't come to Louisiana wearing hip hugger jeans girls because you might get fined 500 DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See it here, I can't believe this is all this state has to worry about!

P.S. I realize the cost of living in Louisiana is lower but I was making an argument that it's just not enough for low-skilled people to make ends meet. This was probably not the best site to post this LOL!

wow.....you do realize that there are other effects, right?

I actually agree with you, but at least try to be pragmatic about it. Going a a jizz run "ain;t helpin' nobody."

Thought I'd through some lousianian in ther for comeupins

I don't understand what you are whining about... the fact that you can't support a family with a minimum wage income, or the fact that you don't have a job yourself.

Damn.

Minimum wage in Oregon is 7.05, I don't know how anybody could possibly survive on 5.15.:Q

Oh, and soon everybody will come in here telling you how it's your fault you're poor.

And it is. But most don't realize how hard it is to break the cycle.

I've heard about this before and from what I recall businesses didn't lose a bunch of $ on having to pay their employees more.

Who said I didn't have a job? Why would I be whinnig if I was sitting on my butt. I realize there might be negative effects of this bill, but that's how it affects me is all I'm telling you guys. There are others that will disagree.

Your entire second paragraph is screaming "I am living off my wife's $6.50 an hour job". You should probably rephrase it if that is not the case.

Seriously, I've come to realize that sitting and typing on an online forum bitching about your problems just doesn't work. Go and do something. Go back to school and get an education or move to another state. I believe some of the cities in CA have min wage set at $10.00 due to high cost of living.

Its actually not a minimum wage. Cities(in most states) have the ability to enact a cost of living wage.

I hear people that work at mcdonalds in NYC make like 10-11 dollars an hour, but a big mac meal costs 7 dollars so you do the math. That is why people go to school I guess, and why I want to live in Oregon.

before you start complaining...

minimum wage in NYC is $5.15... think living on minimum wage in LA is tough?

(not that I've made minimum wage since graduating high school, but I worked with a lot of older people while working at Burger King whose only income came from minimum wage jobs -- often 2 or 3).
