Ok i recently brought a new athlon xp 1800+ retail processor and a Leadtek GF4 ti 4400 my vivo video card. Ok when i first installed it i was using windows 2000 pro with sp2 i even tried sp3 with it to see if that was my problem but it didn't help anything. Ok but in windows 2000 pro with sp3 i will freeze in games every now and then. It doesn't always happen. Most of the time it happens in 30 mins to 2 hours + in a game. I mean it just totally freezes my whole system. I tried everything to figure it out. Even disabling ACPI. Ok here goes for the strange part. I chose to go to Windows XP because someone told me they had a problem like this and when they went to Windows XP it fixed their problem. So heck i said why not so i did that and guess what? I got no freezing in my games at all. Heck i even ran 3dmark2001SE for like 12 hours if not more. Didn't even freeze in 3dmark2001SE either. I don't get it. Everything is the same when i went to Windows XP. My case sides are still on. I know its not a heating issue if games don't freeze on Windows XP. Thing is i wish i could go back to windows 2000 but i can't sense it freezes in games 🙁 Did MS do this lol ? Does anyone have the slightest idea how the OS that use the same kernal could have no freezes in games then the other have the freezes ? I don't get it. I mean heck i had ACPI left on in windows 2000 pro just like i have ACPI on in my Windows XP that is working fine.

Thanks.

Did you do a fresh install of w2k after you changed video card? If not, did you remove the old video card device driver before you installed the new one?

Yes i did a reformat then reinstalled windows 2000 several times. I tried for 30 days + trying to fix these freezes in games. But remember going to Windows XP fixes my problem but its annoying because i want windows 2000 to be my OS. 🙁

It may be one of the Windows 2000 hardware drivers not working properly with your hardware.
Or it could have been something to do with your memory. I had a game keep locking up my windows 2000 once and I finally found out that the game was trying to increase my paging file size and it would freeze when it tried to do this. I finally got it to pop up a windows error that said "Increasing your paging file size" or something similar to that when it froze and when I increased the page file size manually the game worked fine.

I would have to agree with the Pagefile assessment.

WinXP is a lot more agressive when it sets up a swap file, generally
30-40% larger than Win2k.

Ok i installed the via 4 in 1 drivers in windows 2000 when i did a reformat and reinstall windows 2000. The freezing in games is not just in one game. Its in several games. Also in windows 2000 when i take my santa cruz sound card out my games work fine and it does not freeze at all. When i say my games freeze i mean like its a hard lockup. I just don't get how windows 2000 will not freeze at all with games when my santa cruz sound card is taken out. Its just annoying having to use windows xp when i really want to use windows 2000. And yes i did install windows 2000 sp3 ,etc. I even tried a better power supply, tried checking my ram it was fine, tried making sure it wasn't a heat issue. I tried a whole lot for those full 30 days + that i tried fixing the problem. I reformated and reinstalled windows 2000 a lot. I mean my problems are all fixed by going to windows xp but i like windows 2000 better you know. Someone told me i had to install the drivers like via 4 in 1 , service park, etc in a certain order in another forum so i will try that sooner or later whenever i can backup my stuff to reformat my HD and go back to windows 2000. I guess that could of been the problem sense i tried everything else.

Let me get this straight,

you only have the problem when your Santa Cruz sound card is installed? Have you checked that it is not conflicting with any other part of the system? Like vid card? Also did you try it in different pci slots, as some share the resources with AGP!

DaFinn yes i tried every single pci slot. Changing around and everything. I tried like everything. I have my problem fix but thats in windows xp not windows 2000. But remember i like my windows 2000 better so i thought maybe i could get it fixed.

OK, so XP is fine, and 2k is fine if the soundcard's not in.
What drivers are you using for the vidcard and soundcard? Latest Detonators and latest drivers for the soundcard? What version of DirectX?
Also, what are your sound settings in the games? If they're set to the highest-quality, try bumping them down a notch, and see if stuff still locks.
