Ok this is insane(help please)

Ok I got my Duron 600 yesteday. I couldn't wait for my FOP32-1 HSF to arrive so I installed the retail HSF. Overclocked to 700 and 800 at default voltage never got the tempurature above 46 degree C with the retail HSF.

Well today I got my FOP32-1. I immediately shut down my system and installed the FOP32-1. I used alcohol to clean the CPU die. I fired it up at 700mhz and it was RUNNING AT 63 Degrees IDLE. What the hell is wrong?? This makes NO sense. I just froze a minute ago so I rebooted and bumped it back down to 600 and I am running at 57 degrees.

HELP PLEASE. I did notice that there was still a little crap(the stuff from the retail HSF on the CPU(not the actual DIE part though).

you used High Quality Thermal paste or goop?? and the Heatsink is Level and firmly attached??

I know the Durons are hot but the FOP32-1 should bring temps down or atleast Remain the Same...

It is not making good contact.

clean those little pads off the duron and get a copper spacer. Then once you get the spacer, take a true bar and check that the die extends just ever so slightly above the spacer. Put some arctic silver on it and you'll be set.

I took an old PPGA globalwin heatsink and just ground the edge that went over the plastic end of the socket. Now it makes great contact with my FCPGA celeron. The C566 is running at 850 without trouble.

No I didn't use paste yet. My Arctic silver paste should be here by the middle of next week. So my FOP32-1 had a thermal pad just like the retail heatsink/fan had on it. But regardless the tempurature should not have gone up by 20 damn degrees.

damn this fscking sucks. I can't even run at 600 stable really. I can surf the web but once I try quake3 i hit 65 degrees.

I could see it not making good contact if it wasn't so hard to get on. The bracket for the FOP32-1 was so hard to get on I have to use a screw driver. and I am pretty sure that it is making contact because when I took the FOP32-1 off, I could see the imprint on thermal pad where the DIE had been.

BTW, I would rather not modify my chip when there is no need to. People have put the FOP32-1 on their durons without a problem.

Well I don't know the performance level of the Thermal Pad that GW uses, but it's usually pretty bad.... I wouldn't trust a thermal pad with a Red hot AMD chip...

Definitely use the machine sparingly until that paste arives....
